Based on IMARPE's Scientific Recommendations, the Expanded Quota and Extended Season Aim to Revitalize the National Fishing Economy.

LIMA – Peru's Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has approved a significant increase in the Maximum Allowable Catch Limit (LMCTP) for jumbo squid, or pota (Dosidicus gigas), for the first fishing period of 2025. The quota has been raised from 190,000 to 290,000 tonnes, with the extraction period now extended until August 31, 2025.

This decision, formalized via Ministerial Resolution N.º 00180-2025-PRODUCE, follows a rigorous technical and scientific evaluation by the Peruvian Marine Research Institute (IMARPE). IMARPE's reports confirm a high availability of the resource and recommend this adjustment to ensure its sustainable utilization.

“This technical decision allows us to optimize the responsible use of a strategic resource for the country, providing stability to the fishing sector and generating greater economic opportunities, especially for coastal regions. We are supporting a fishing economy that does not stop,” highlighted Jesús Barrientos, Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Sustainability and Continuous Monitoring

The new catch limit aligns with scientific projections that guarantee a rational exploitation of the resource. Although IMARPE's report indicates that the current pota biomass is still in a recovery phase, consistent with current marine conditions, PRODUCE emphasizes continuous monitoring to ensure responsible management and maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem.

Extending the fishing period until the end of August 2025 not only ensures the continuity of extractive operations but also facilitates better planning for fishermen and processing plants.

“At PRODUCE, we reaffirm our commitment to fisheries management based on scientific evidence, promoting resource sustainability and strengthening the national economy. This is a commitment to orderly, modern, and sustainable fisheries development,” added Vice Minister Barrientos.

Jumbo squid is one of Peru's most crucial hydrobiological resources, both in terms of catch volume and its significant contribution to job creation and foreign exchange earnings through the export of value-added products. Proper management of this fishery is fundamental to maintaining Peru's leadership as one of the world's primary producers of jumbo squid.
