The 36th session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI36) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) began today in Rome, bringing together key policy makers, experts and partners from the fisheries and aquaculture sector to global level.

The meeting, which runs until July 12, will focus on the crucial role of fisheries and aquaculture in the fight against food insecurity, malnutrition and poverty. Additionally, special emphasis will be placed on how these sectors can alleviate hunger, drive sustainable growth and reverse environmental degradation.

QU Dongyu, Director-General of FAO, highlighted in his opening message that aquaculture will overtake capture fisheries as the main supplier of aquatic animals in 2022. According to the recent FAO SOFIA report, global fisheries and aquaculture production reached a record 223.2 million tons that year.

Key topics to discuss include:

  • The role of aquatic foods in global food security and nutrition.
  • Its potential as a solution to climate change.
  • The contribution of effective management to long-term biodiversity objectives.
  • Challenges such as climate change and plastic pollution.
  • Improving data collection and assessment systems for fish stocks.
  • Presentation of the first results of FishMIP 2.0, an initiative that foresees the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems and fishing.
  • Implications of the Kunming-Montreal global biodiversity framework on fisheries and aquaculture.

COFI36 seeks to foster evidence-based policies and promote the sustainable expansion of aquaculture, especially in food-deficit regions. The development of aquatic food value chains, including loss and waste reduction, will also be discussed.

This meeting represents a crucial opportunity to address global challenges in aquatic food systems and strengthen the sector's contribution to global food security and environmental sustainability.
