The bill will begin to be discussed in particular in the same instance and trips to regions will continue to listen to fishermen and organizations.

When the idea of legislating for a New Fisheries Law was unanimously approved in the House Fisheries Committee, the bill presented by President Gabriel Boric took an important step in its legislative processing. The initiative seeks to implement a framework regulation for modern, transparent, sustainable and equitable Chilean fishing activity that is responsible for responding to the main challenges that the activity and the sector has and will have.

This initiative, presented by the Executive, was the result of a widely participatory process of the national artisanal and industrial fishing sector, related activities and processing plants, where, in addition, scientists, academics and members of NGOs participated, among them other actors.

After approval by all the deputies attending the commission, the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Julio Salas, expressed that he was very proud of the step taken today by the New Fisheries Law project. The authority highlighted the positive and enriching climate of debate that has been generated, which is the result of the entire process of transversal dialogue that has occurred with the different actors.

Likewise, he valued the willingness of all parliamentarians to advance the idea of legislating for a new regulatory body for the national fishing sector.

Proof of the above is the fact that the Fisheries Commission is meeting three times a week, and that they have also met in three different cities: Caldera, Iquique and Valparaíso. In addition, this Friday they will meet in Maule and soon in Biobío, Los Lagos and Aysén.

In relation to the meetings with fishing, the authority explained that with the development of the more than 200 meetings held for the preparation of the New Fisheries Law project, they went far beyond what the Lobby Law requires; and the result is total and complete transparency, and transversal participation.

"The idea of approving in general allows the debate that we have later in the regions to address the matters that are also of interest to the territories, what we saw in Iquique, what we saw in Valparaíso are organizations that come with proposals (...) and now Once this idea of legislating in general has been approved, we will be able to move forward more quickly in defining a deadline for indications to be able to enter some elements that can be incorporated into the project," specified Undersecretary Salas.

Among the main axes of the law initiative that emanated from the Executive stand out: sustainable development of fishing activity, equity in the sector, social protection for artisanal fishermen, scientific-technical approach and incentive for human consumption.

Finally, the parliamentarians of the commission agreed that the deadline to receive the instructions will be until Friday, April 26.
