The farmed fish market in Brazil had a busy week, marked by significant changes in prices and expectations for the near future. Since the announcement of imports of tilapia fillet from Vietnam in January, the situation has been unstable, with price drops in several regions. However, a joint statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Fisheries announcing the suspension of import licenses brought new life to the sector.

Relief for the fish market
The market reaction was immediate. In just three days of collecting prices, we saw a notable turnaround in some regions. According to the Cepea – Peixe BR tilapia indicator, in the Great Lakes region, for example, there was a small drop of 0.01 cent (USD 0.0020), while in the north of Paraná the average price rose to R$ 9.97 (USD 2.01 ), representing an increase of 0.02 cents (USD 0.0040). In western Paraná, prices remained stable at R$ 9.52 (USD 1.92).
In Morada Nova de Minas, a drop of 0.01 cent (USD 0.0020) was recorded, with the average price stabilizing at R$ 9.50 (USD 1.92). However, the big news came from the Triângulo Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba region, where the average price reached R$ 9.63 (USD 1.94). Congratulations to local producers for this achievement, which further strengthens national fish farming.
Ministerial visit and decision-making
The week was also marked by the visit of Minister André de Paula to the Great Lakes region. During his stay, he had the opportunity to get to know the tilapia production process up close, from raising fry to the operation of slaughterhouses and feed factories. This initiative was fundamental in showing the government the importance and quality of national production.
During the visit, the minister announced an important decision: in response to concerns raised by Peixe BR and other producers, minister Carlos Fávaro requested the immediate suspension of tilapia imports from Vietnam. This measure, which is already in force, reflects the government's commitment to protecting the health and quality of Brazilian products.

Perspectives for Carnival
With the suspension of imports and stable prices, farmed fish producers can breathe a little easier this Carnival. The battle is not yet won, but this achievement represents an important step in defending the sector's interests. Now it's time to enjoy a well-deserved rest and celebrate this victory, but without losing sight of the challenges that still lie ahead.
Meanwhile, consumers can await Lent with positive expectations, as the supply of quality fish tends to increase, providing a variety of options for dishes typical of this time of year.
In short, the suspension of imports brought new life to the farmed fish market in Brazil. With determination and unity, the sector continues to face challenges and seek solutions that guarantee its growth and long-term sustainability. May this Carnival not only be one of rest, but also of renewal and hope for everyone involved in the Brazilian fish farming production chain.
