The company, controlled by Abanca and which is waiting for an operation to be completed that will leave it in the hands of the Canadian Cooke, indicates that the affected personnel work in the central services of Galicia and Madrid.

The multinational fishing company Nueva Pescanova has reported that it is going to lay off a hundred workers from its central services in Chapela (in Redondela, Pontevedra) and Madrid. The announcement comes after results from the last year that showed million-dollar losses -53 million euros in the fiscal year that ended in March- and in the midst of negotiations for its purchase by the Canadian company Cooke.

An Employment Regulation File (ERE by its acronym in Spanish) is a procedure through which a company in a bad economic situation seeks to obtain authorization to suspend or dismiss workers -->

More In a brief statement, the company indicates that it has conveyed to the company committees and union delegates its intention to initiate the file, which it justifies "for economic and organizational reasons." He does not specify the exact number of layoffs he proposes and simply says that there are just under a hundred and that, in total, the workforce is made up of 10,000 people, Europa Press reports.

The goal, he says, is to “ensure the long-term sustainability of the company” and “adapt to a challenging global environment.” He adds that he has “explored” other alternatives and assures that he has tried to “minimize the impact” on workers.

“Following the results of the last financial year, derived mainly from high costs and the inflationary environment, the company considers it essential to optimize its structure to adapt it to a market that is going through a very difficult time. Nueva Pescanova seeks, with these adjustments, to improve its positioning in the market and maintain excellence in its services and products,” the statement concludes.
