  • Local authorities investigate a message in a bottle in which a crew member says he is locked up on a Chinese ship
  • The Prefecture is working to contact the ship, which is located near the port of Montevideo in coordination with the maritime agency for the inspection of the ship that is in the anchorage area.
  • The vessel is listed on the register of fishing vessels that are authorized to fish in the SPRFMO Convention Area.

A bottle with a letter in Chinese was found in the Sauce de Portezuelo area, a town located 110km from the city of Montevideo (capital). In the message, which was translated, a person asks for help and says they are trapped on a fishing vessel.

According to sources from the Uruguayan Prefecture, the text is a request for help from an alleged crew member of a squid jigger fishing vessel of Chinese origin, about which information is detailed in the message. The person claims to be locked up there and begs whoever accesses the paper to go to the police. The letter closes with the initials: "S.O.S".

"Hello, I am a crew member of the ship Lu Qing Yuan Yu 765, they locked me up in the company. When you see this paper, please help me call the police! HELP - HELP," the letter says.

From the Uruguayan Navy, they informed the local media outlet Underlined that the ship is now in an anchoring and services area, close to the port of Montevideo and that it is coordinating with the maritime agency to inspect it. The initial work was in the Piriápolis Prefecture and was referred to the Flagrancia Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutor Diego Pérez is in charge of the investigation.

The Prefecture began work to communicate with the ship in question, which could be determined to be near the port of Montevideo, on a specific anchoring area and waiting west. In this space the boats remain in the water, although at the same point.

From the communication area of the Prefecture of the port of Montevideo, it was reported that they are working to coordinate an exchange with the maritime agency of the ship, with the aim that it agrees to enter the port and from this it can be inspected. With this, the authorities will be able to corroborate or dismiss the information found inside the bottle.
