A lawyer in International Law specializing in the Administration of Maritime Spaces, Dr. Alejandro Canio, maintains that the allegations of illegal fishing and depredation in the South Atlantic that went viral last week after a flight piloted by Enrique Piñeyro is a "false scenario" for "Install that Argentina does not take care of its sea".

The Doctor in International Law specialized in Administration of Maritime Spaces, lawyer Alejando Canio, maintained that the massive denunciations of alleged illegal fishing and depredation of the Argentine Sea by national media, NGOs and environmentalists last week after the flight piloted by Enrique Piñeyro on mile 200 of the Argentine Sea are a "false scenario" that seeks to "install that Argentina does not take care of its sea" in order to weaken and weaken the Argentine position before the international community.

To be clearer, the specialist explained in dialogue with FM Master's that "a false scenario has been generated about mile 201 and confusion about illegal fishing and depredation of the Argentine Sea."

According to Canio, there is a "media attempt to present to the international community that Argentina does not take care of its sea in order to create a Regional Organization for Fisheries Management (RFMO), something that would give participation to nations such as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and would thus give it recognition at the 'table' of South Atlantic fisheries." The ultimate goal would be to "install resource management through these organizations."

It should be noted that on board of said flight, in addition to journalists and NGO representatives, several ambassadors from Europe and the United States in Argentina were present, such as Marc Stanley from the United States, Amador Sánchez Rico from the European Union, Kirsty Hayes from Great Britain and Hiroshi Yamauchi from Japan.

"Journalistic articles with alleged complaints about illegal fishing, depredation, generate in national public opinion the idea that the only way we have to save this problem is by conserving and that the only way to conserve is through an RFMO, since Argentina currently applies an unregulated fishing regime without RFMOs," Canio explained.

Finally, the specialist questioned what is true about the depredation of the Argentine Sea, Canio expressed: "I would like those who speak of depredation to present reports from a scientific institution with evidence that proves it. What scientific institution ensures depredation in the Sea Argentinian?".

In this same sense, the Federation of Argentine Sea Workers (FeTraMar) spoke out, questioning and denouncing as "inaccuracies and falsehoods" the statements promoted by Píñeyro and his NGO Solidaire about economic depredation and ecological devastation in the Argentine Sea.

In the end, the lawyer opined that "in Argentina we must work to have a team that deals with these issues. Few of us are immersed in the issue. I celebrate the creation of Pampa Azul, which works to raise awareness about the sovereign aspects of the South Atlantic. We (Argentina) are the sea and it is time to start consolidating that maritime quality that we do not have and communicate these issues."

"Marine Protected Areas are innovative tools that under jurisdiction are very useful when managing resources but also assimilating the maritime issue," he stated.
