In the first 10 months of the year, shrimp exports from Ecuador already exceeded the income for all of 2021. Thus, Ecuador consolidates its shrimp exports to China.

By the end of October, shrimp exports from Ecuador had already surpassed all of its 2021 revenue, reaching 886,000 tonnes. For all of last year they reached a record figure of 842 thousand tons, so it is expected that by the end of 2022 they will exceed one million tons.

Growth was led by exports to China, which reached a record 58,000 tonnes in October, representing a 71% year-over-year increase. In the first 10 months of 2022 alone, Ecuadorian shrimp exports to China reached 490,000 tons, 63% more than in the same period last year.

In contrast, exports to the US and the EU fell 8% and 5% in October, respectively, to 13,000 and 17,000 tonnes. This drop was due to high energy prices in Europe and the continued increase in interest rates in the US to combat inflation. In October, Ecuadorian shrimp exports to the US and the main EU markets (Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands) fell sharply. In general, in the first 10 months, exports to these two markets reached 161,000 and 160,000 tons, respectively, 7% and 1% more than in the same period of 2022.

In value terms, shrimp exports from Ecuador reached $5.67 billion (€5.39 billion) in October this year, an increase of 43% over the same period last year. Exports to China reached 3,040 million dollars (2,890 million euros), 76% more.

Shrimp production in Ecuador will go from 1.01 million tons in 2021 to 1.35 million tons in 2022, which, together with significant exports to China, will lead to new records in the sector.
