On Friday, through the Tactical Operations Center of the Fleet Command (COT), several vessels were detected in Uruguay's exclusive economic zone "apparently carrying out illegal fishing," the Navy said in a statement.
As a result of this, the Naval Aviation B-200 T aircraft made a reconnaissance flight and detected two jiggers 150 nautical miles southeast of Punta del Este.
The aircraft made a photographic record during the day, and detected "displayed fishing gear" and "at night the lights used for fishing turned on, in alleged criminal activity."
According to the Navy, on Saturday the ROU 23 sailed to the place, arrived on Sunday and found one of the boats, named "Lu Rong Yuan Yu 606". After approaching her and making a visit, it was confirmed that "they had fishing elements, but they had no cargo in their holds."
The statement adds that, "in the first instance, the boat fled after receiving notice that they would be approached to receive a visit and inspection" and this led to a chase that lasted all night on Sunday and ended in the morning. of this Monday.
The vessel is currently being transferred to the Port of Montevideo, anticipating arriving tomorrow. The crew of her will be handed over to the competent authorities, adds the Navy.
