The ban on sand lance (or sand eel) fry "Shinko" fishing, which announces the arrival of spring in the Seto Inland Sea, was lifted in Osaka Bay and Harima Nada on the 1st.

Shinko is used for sweet and spicy tsukudani called "Kugi-boiled" and is popular as a local dish in the coastal area.
On this day, fishing boats departed from Hayashizaki Fishing Port in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture. From the ship that returned to the port after 8 am, baskets containing sand eels, about 3 cm long, were landed one after another, and the price of one basket (about 25 kg) was 80,000 yen (U$D 695) at the first auction.

In recent years, the sea has become too clean and the catch has decreased due to the effects of the oligotrophic lack of nitrogen and phosphorous necessary for plankton growth. The annual catch of 10,000 to 30,000 tons in the prefecture has dropped sharply since 2017, and in 2020 it became a record low catch of 147 tons. Although it recovered slightly to 1,451 tonnes in 2009, the Prefectural Fishery Technology Center predicts it will also be "below normal" this season.
The fishing season used to be about a month, but in 2009, Harima Nada was shortened to 15 days and Osaka Bay was shortened to 6 days. The last fishing day of this season will also be decided by evaluating the stock situation.
