  • The Chinese fishing vessel Lu Rong Yuan YU 688 was caught by the coast guard "Prefect Figue" fishing for squid in Argentine jurisdictional waters.
  • The hijacked foreign boat would be transferred to Puerto Madryn, as reported, the federal justice of that city intervening in the case.
As reported by the newspaper La Capital, from Mar del Plata, the capture occurred shortly before noon in the area where captains of Argentine fishing vessels had been denouncing the presence of at least a hundred Chinese jiggers fishing at mile 196, within the Exclusive Economic Zone.

After the complaints published in the last hours with videos recorded by the Argentine captains where you could see real floating cities made up of Chinese jiggers fishing five or six miles within the Exclusive Economic Zone, the Prefecture sent a plane to the area that it managed with its witness illegal boats relocating outside of mile 200.

However, according to testimonies of Argentine sailors in the area, within a few hours they returned to the Argentine waters to catch squid, operating with their location systems turned off, while the identification signs of the "pirate" vessels appeared to be covered

The Prefectural authorities ordered the departure of GC 27 Prefect Figue from the Port of Ingeniero White, managing to detect and stop one of the Chinese vessels, in this case, the fishing vessel Lu Rong Yuan Yu 688.

Marine Conservation Specialist Milko Schvartzman, referring to the history of the Chinese fleet when Lu Rong Yuan Yu 606 was captured on April 28, 2020 for illegal fishing in the Argentine EEZ area. He tells FIS that "the company that owns the captured the vessel Lu Rong Yuan Yu 606 is Rongcheng Homey Ocean Fishing on April 28. Other vessels in this fleet belong to Rongcheng Hongshun Aquatic Company (荣成 市 泓 顺 水产 有限公司) and Rongcheng Rongyuan Fishery Co Ltd among others.

Likewise, the Chinese State is a partner in illegal fishing activities, subsidizing the fuel and equipment of these vessels and promoting illegal activities by covering them up and the absence of sanctions against shipowners or vessels. "

He also comments that "about 20 Lu Rong Yuan Yu vessels operate from the Port of Montevideo, where they do not receive inspections or control over the catch, sanitary, environmental or safety of navigation, and are exempt from taxes.

It has been verified that in Montevideo they have docked with the following irregularities: Name and / or adulterated registration, boats with name and / or twin registration, without identifying name ".

To complement his contribution, Milko Schvartzman encloses the following written information:

-Between April 2017 and July 2018, 4 vessels of the Lu Rong Yuan Yu group, two dead crewmen, one serious and two "with health problems" have disembarked in the port of Montevideo.
-Lu Rong Yuan Yu 679: a deceased crew member and another had to go to the doctor.
-Lu Rong Yuan Yu 939: A crew member with health problems enters to get off.
-Lu Rong Yuan Yu 895: 'To wall to go down seriously injured'
-Lu Rong Yuan Yu 977: ‘The ship carries a deceased crew member’
-The Lu Rong Yuan Yu fleet is estimated to have been involved in the ARA San Juan submarine incident, specifically the Lu Rong Yuan Yu 883:

-In 2019 the LRYY 333 and LRYY 999 were denounced for conditions of forced labor, including insufficient food and water, excessive hours of work and non-pay while operating in the Pacific Ocean, in Peruvian waters. These also operated from Montevideo.
-LRYY 883 entered the Argentine EEZ in 2016:

-In 2019 the Lu Rong Yuan Yu 956 was detained in Ghana for using illegal fishing gear.
-China's "distant water fishing" fleet uses slave labor originating mainly from Indonesia, the Philippines and Africa.
