The Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries announced a new extension to the small pelagic fishing ban, after knowing the results of the scientific survey conducted by the National Fisheries Institute (INP) on the coastal profile of Ecuador to determine the current population of resources.

The results of the study reveal that the species of mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is beginning its spawning process, as is the sardine (Etrumeus tere), due to the records in a higher proportion of eggs in the initial stage. Therefore, it is inferred that these resources are beginning their reproductive activity, in response to environmental changes and fishing pressure.

Based on the foregoing, and in response to a precautionary measure, the Ministry decided to extend the period of biological closure for the capture of small pelagic fish to additional days, from November 24 to December 8, 2018.

During the new ban period, all boats, both artisanal and industrial ones, with purse seine net, dragnet and all those catching small pelagic fish, must remain in port for the indicated time.
