The Association of Fishing Industrialists (ASIPES) estimates that the losses caused by the three days’ work stoppage by fleet and plant workers of the fishing industry in the Bío Bío region due to the giant squid issue amounted to around CLP 4,700 million (USD 7.4 million).
The strike was lifted on Friday afternoon after the government had agreed to form a working table with the workers participating in the strike, BioBioChile reported.
According to Macarena Cepeda, ASIPES, the situation caused trouble to the industry mainly due to the delivery commitments that the companies had.
However, and in spite of the economic losses caused by the strike, she said that the union shares the concern of the workers in the face of uncertainty.
Today, the deputies of the Fisheries Committee of the Lower Chamber are invited to debate, among other issues, on the motions presented to the bill intended to leave the jigger catch manual technique as the only way to fish for the resource.
This measure would force the fishing industry to dispense with several vessels, which would seriously affect the activity of the fleet and processing plants.
