In an important advance for the country's economy and food security, the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) reported that the capture of the eastern Pacific bonito resource (Sarda chiliensis chiliensis) has reached a record of 71,411.88 tons until May 2024.

This achievement represents an increase of 81% compared to the similar period of the previous year and 79% more compared to 2022.

The methods used in captures, such as the purse seine and passive gear (curtain nets), have shown outstanding performance this year, with a total landing of 60,080.76 tons and 11,331.13 tons respectively.

The Minister of Production, Sergio González, indicated that this record in the capture of eastern Pacific bonito is a significant milestone for the fishing industry and reflects the joint efforts of the government and fishermen to promote sustainable fishing practices and guarantee a valuable resource for our country.

“We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to maintain this positive momentum and ensure a prosperous future for the fishing industry,” he added.

Likewise, he also highlighted the strengthening of food security that guarantees an accessible and nutritious source of protein for millions of Peruvians, contributing, with the consumption of eastern Pacific bonito, to the fight against anemia in the country.

By geographic space

It should be noted that, regarding catches by geographical area, Arequipa leads with more than 30,000 tons; followed by Ica, with 11,841 tons; and Áncash, with 9,361 tons, highlighting these three as the regions with the highest landing activity, which contributes significantly to the total volume and regional development.

This increase in catch coincides with a growth in the number of fishermen involved in the activity, economically revitalizing numerous families and communities dependent on fishing. The expansion of the workforce in this sector reflects its potential to improve the lives of many Peruvians, offering stable work opportunities and promoting local economic growth.
