Anchovy fishing suspended in part of northern-central zone

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) decided to suspend anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and longnose anchovy (Anchoa nasus) catch for a ten-day period in the area between the northern tip of the maritime domain of Peru and 12° 00'LS, from 5 to 30 nautical miles off the coast.

The measure, which began to take effect on Sunday, was set on the basis of a report from Instituto del Mar del ​​Peru (IMARPE), which indicates that the incidence of juvenile anchovy species reached 97 per cent in the aforementioned maritime area. For this reason, scientists recommend implementing precautionary protection measures to juvenile anchovy specimens in that area.

The IMARPE will monitor and follow up the main biological, population and fishery indicators of the resource and must inform and timely recommend the fisheries management measures to the Ministry of Production.

The second fishing season of the anchovy and longnose anchovy resource in the northern-central zone began on Monday, November 27 and will end when the maximum total allowable catch limit (1.49 million tonnes) is reached, or failing that, when the IMARPE recommends it.

Before the start of the season, the Ministry of Production authorized the performance of an exploratory fishery between November 23 and 26 in order to have up-to-date information on anchovy distribution, its size structure and the incidence of other species.
