In 2024, the projected catch of iwashi is 579 thousand tons. At the same time, the volume of catch can be adjusted as the fishing season progresses.

Pelagic fishing (fishing for sardines, mackerel, and saury) occurs in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean.

The domestic fleet fishes for iwashi and mackerel both in Russian waters and in Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). At the same time, the main volume of Iwashi to date has been caught in the Russian part; last year, a large share was provided by foreign catches.

The Far Eastern sardine, or Iwashi , ( lat.  Sardinops melanostictus ) is a marine fish of the genus Sardinops ( Sardinops ). The trade name "Iwashi herring" was given to this fish due to the outward resemblance to herring and its Japanese name "ma-iwashi". Source: Stockfile FIS

Migrations of Iwashi into the Russian EEZ begin earlier every year. The active phase of the Iwashi sardine fishery will begin in the summer.

According to industry science, the largest volume will be in the South Kuril zone (465 thousand tons), in second place is the North Kuril zone (almost 100 thousand tons), the rest of the catch is in the West Sakhalin subzone and Primorye.

The volume of catch of Iwashi sardine in the Kuril waters in 2023 amounted to 544 thousand tons - this is a record figure for the post-Soviet period.

Russian fishermen have surpassed the 2 million ton mark: positive fishing dynamics continue in the Far Eastern, Northern and Azov-Black Sea basins

By May 21, 2024, according to the industry monitoring system of Rosrybolovstvo (TSMS), the catch by all Russian users exceeded 2 million tons - 3% more than the level of 2023 for the same period.

Including:

  • Far Eastern basin – almost 1.6 million tons (+ 6%)
  • Northern basin – more than 208 thousand tons (+ 10%)
  • Western basin - 42 thousand tons.
  • Azov-Black Sea basin – 14.2 thousand tons (+2.6%)
  • Volga-Caspian basin - 42.5 thousand tons.

In the exclusive economic zones of foreign states, conventional areas and the open part of the World Ocean, the Russian fleet produced 161.7 thousand tons.
