It was mainly due to the growth in squid sales of 75% with a price increase and an increase in filet sales of 19%. Shrimp continues to provide negative numbers: tail sales have now fallen by 26% compared to 2023.

Exports of primary products increased by 39.7% in the first months of the year compared to the same period in 2023, while agricultural manufactures increased by 7.4%. The fishing sector, which represents 4.2% of total exports, had an increase of 18.2%, totaling 827 million dollars. Squid was the product that stood out for its growth in sales and also, although to a lesser extent, hake filets contributed to the positive indices for the sector. Shrimp, on the other hand, continued to fall, now adding a sharp drop in tail sales, which until now, despite falls in price, had not experienced drops in demand. Europe remains the main export destination (48%), followed by Asia (25%) and Latin America (10%).

Hake fillets have had an increase in demand of 18% in volume and 19% in revenue, thanks to a slight increase in price of 1.2%, reaching $3,280 per ton. In total, 26,823 tons were exported for 88 million dollars.

The main export destination was Brazil, which increased demand by 31.4% and had an increase in the average price of 1.4%, placing it at values above the average. With 6 thousand tons imported, 4 thousand less than Brazil and with a price 50 dollars lower per ton, Spain is ranked as the second most important market. In third place is the United States with only 2 thousand tons, but with one of the best prices on the market, at $3,493 per ton.

For whole hake, H&G or other products other than filet, the figures were also positive given that demand increased by 39.6% with 16,401 tons; but collection did not reach the same levels (36.6%) due to a 2.2% drop in price that placed the ton at $1,504. In total, 16,401 tons were exported for 24 million dollars.

The main export destination was Russia (4,523 tons), which increased purchases by 50% and although the price fell 6%, it remained above the average price. In second and third place are Israel and Spain, but with much lower volumes: 910 tons for the first and 722 for the second, with a price for the Israelis below the average and higher in the case of the Spaniards who paid 1,866 dollars per ton.

In the case of whole shrimp, a tiny increase in the average price of 0.2% according to official data and 0.8% according to CAPECA data stands out, which leaves the value per ton at 5,390 dollars for the first case and 5,739 dollars in the second; In any case, in both cases the price is very depressed compared to the years 2021 and 2022. In total, 13,999 tons were exported for a value of 75 million dollars, which represents an increase in sales and collection of the order of 14% compared to 2023.

The main destination was Spain, which required 110% more than last year, although with one of the lowest prices on the market, at $5,316 per ton. Italy, on the other hand, paid the best price, at 5,905 per ton, but reduced demand by 13%; and Russia, which is the third largest market, reduced demand by 35% and paid the lowest price on the market, at $4,690 per ton.

Shrimp tails, which until now had suffered drops in price, also had a sharp drop in demand. 27,519 tons were exported, 25.6% less than in 2023 and 203 million dollars were collected, 26.4% less; The difference between these indices is due to a drop in the price of one point, remaining at $7,371 per ton.

The main market was China and the drop in sales to this destination was 34%. Spain, which is the second most important market, also reduced purchases by 15% and Peru, the third most important, bought 4% less. The United States, which occupies fourth place, is not a destination country for reprocessing; value-added products reach this market and had an increase in demand of 14%, paying $11,266 per ton.

The mollusk was the great star that improved all the indices of the fishing industry: in volume it was exported 75% more than last year but the increase in price by 17.3%, which placed it at 2,523 dollars per ton, made it possible that the increase in collection was 105.5%, higher than that of 2023 for this date. In total, 121,436 tons were sold for 306 million dollars.

With an increase in demand of 163%, China took the place of the main market; South Korea is second, with an increase in demand of 29% and Singapore is third with an increase of 273%, leaving Spain in fourth place despite requiring 146% more than last year and, as usual, paying the best price on the market, which is related to the type of product that reaches that market. The three main destinations took 68% of the exported squid and in all cases paid values below the average price.

Patagonian Toothfish and King Crab

Sales of toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) had a significant increase of 132%, exporting 961 tons, but revenue had a smaller increase (121%) due to a 5% drop in price, remaining at $25,261 per ton. The United States, which increased demand by 75%, was the main buyer; and China remains a new client, taking almost a third of the total exports.

Sales of crab (Lithodes santolla) also had a significant increase and in this case, as in toothfish, the incorporation of China as a buyer stands out, surpassing the demand from the United States. In total, 1,178 tons were exported for 24 million dollars at an average value of 20,262 per ton, which implies a 3% drop in price. In the case of the United States, although they paid 2% cheaper than last year, the price remained above the average, while China paid a value below the average, about 350 dollars less than the Americans.
