IN BRIEF - Tunisia’s aquaculture sector sees rising investment in 2024

TUNISIA
Thursday, March 13, 2025

Tunisia's aquaculture sector experienced significant investment growth in 2024, with approved projects valued at US$8.4 million, a sevenfold increase from 2023's US$1.8 million.

This growth reflects a rising interest in aquaculture, despite its limited contribution to local fish supply. In 2022, aquaculture accounted for only 13% (21,000 tons) of Tunisia's total fish production (158,500 tons). The government aims to increase aquaculture's contribution to 30% by 2030.

Marine fish farming is the dominant aquaculture activity. However, aquaculture remains one of the least invested sectors in agriculture. In 2024, private investments in agriculture totaled US$144 million, with aquaculture representing only 5.8%. Agriculture received the majority of investments (58.7%), followed by agriculture/maritime fishing services (21.2%) and maritime fishing (11.5%).

Tunisia has significant aquaculture potential due to its 1,350-kilometer coastline, extensive maritime zone (over 80,000 sq km), and lagoons (100,000 hectares). The country has 25 marine aquaculture farms, producing 400-3,500 tons annually, mainly seabass and seabream. In 2021, aquaculture accounted for 16% of Tunisia’s aquatic product output and employed over 2,000 people.

IN BRIEF - China Partially Lifts Ban on Japanese Fishery Products

CHINA
Wednesday, July 02, 2025

Beijing (Jiji Press) – China has lifted its two-year blanket ban on Japanese fishery product imports, effective Sunday, June 29. The ban was imposed in August 2023 following the release of treated water from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.

However, a ban remains for 10 prefectures, including Tokyo and Fukushima, which were already restricted.

Japanese Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi welcomed the decision Monday, calling it a "significant milestone." He stated that both public and private sectors would work to resume exports quickly. Koizumi added that Japan will continue to urge China to lift the remaining bans and resume Japanese beef imports.

An agreement on resumption procedures was reached by both governments in late May.

An appeal to collect fishing gear at the end of its useable life saw more than one tonne of equipment dropped off at a dock.

East Suffolk Council held the four-day appeal at Hamilton Dock in Lowestoft to try to prevent redundant tackle from damaging the environment.

Members of the commercial fishing fleet dropped off a total of 1,194kg of items including nets, ropes, plastic pots and fish crates - the gill nets contained the equivalent of several kilometres of filament, line and rope.

EUROPEAN UNION
Wednesday, July 02, 2025

Affordability and shifting trade dynamics are reshaping global seafood markets in 2025, as inflation and tariffs pressure consumer choices and supply chains, according to a report from aquaculture lender and market analyst Rabobank.

In the United States, high import tariffs may exacerbate inflation-driven affordability concerns, prompting consumers to opt for cheaper protein alternatives in price-sensitive retail segments.

Meanwhile, China’s seafood demand is expected to see modest improvement in 2025, supported by stimulus packages. However, persistent consumer price sensitivity may limit growth and lead to downtrading within the protein category.

Other Media | La Voz de Galicia: Anfaco Changes Its Surname

SPAIN
Tuesday, July 01, 2025

Before becoming the National Association of Canned Food Manufacturers, Anfaco was simply the Union of Manufacturers. An alliance that was established in 1904 "to promote industrial development linked to the sea." And that remains its objective, but its activities are not, by any means, what they were then. Not even what they were doing when the name was changed to Anfaco. With the subsequent addition of the surname Cecopesca (Fishing Technology Center), the association wanted to make its technical and research nature clear. And now that it has transcended canning to encompass other branches of the maritime-industry chain and has developed significant scientific and laboratory activity, to the point of being "one of the main technological centers in Europe specializing in the bioeconomy of the sea," the organization has decided to change its name and its surname: Anfaco-Cytma.

In April, Peruvian authorities established a total allowable catch (TAC) of 3 million metric tons (MT) for the season, based on technical and biological reports submitted by the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe). This TAC marks the second-highest seasonal quota in the last decade, Peru’s Production Ministry (PRODUCE) announced at the time
