The general secretary of theSpanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA), Javier Garat, has been appointed president of the Spanish Maritime Cluster, an organization that represents all economic activities, institutions, associations and companies that have a relationship with the sea, and whose objective is extend and improve the so-called blue economy, acting as a communication vehicle for the sector with the Government and public administrations.
Garat has a degree in Law and a diploma in Community Law from the Complutense University of Madrid (C.E.U. San Pablo) and a Master's degree in International and European Law from the Catholic University of Leuven (U.C.L. Belgium). The new president of the Spanish Maritime Cluster, a full academician of the Royal Academy of the Sea, has an extensive career in the field of fishing that began in 1996 when he joined the team of the Legal Service of the European Commission and as assistant to the Fisheries Counselor of the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union.

MIRI - The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained two foreign fishing vessels and 10 crew members, including two skippers, for alleged encroachment and illegal fishing into Malaysian waters.

MMEA Sarawak director First Admiral (Maritime) Kamal Ariffin Jusoh said the two vessels were detained approximately 132 nautical miles northwest of Tanjong Baram last Saturday.
“On Oct 5, at around 10.18am, the MMEA patrol vessel was conducting a routine patrol in Sarawak waters when they detected two suspicious-looking vessels suspected of encroachment and illegal fishing activities.
“The patrol ship intercepted the first vessel at 11.35am, and upon inspection, found it to be a Vietnamese fishing vessel with five crew members, including a skipper.
“The crew, aged between 48 and 66, were subsequently apprehended,” he told a press conference after officiating the closing of the MMEA Search and Rescue exercise (Sarex) at a leading hotel here today.
Kamal Ariffin mentioned that the second vessel was detained at 11.55am, and five crew members, including a skipper, aged between 30 and 63, were arrested.
A total of 776 individuals in Ghana's Volta Region received hands-on training in aquaculture business through the government's Aquaculture for Food and Jobs Programme.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture in collaboration with R and B Farms, aims to equip over 10,000 Ghanaians with the skills needed to start and manage aquaculture enterprises.
The training covered key areas such as fish farming techniques, marketing, and financial management, promoting sustainable livelihoods, food security, and economic growth. Volta Regional Minister Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa emphasized the potential of the program to economically empower participants, offering not only technical knowledge but also support in launching their businesses.
Freire and Armón shipyards enter the 50 million euro tender
The Vigo naval company, established as an international benchmark in the construction of marine research vessels, is now bidding for the new order from the Technical University of Denmark, valued at 370 million Danish crowns, almost 50 million euros. Freire and Armón Vigo have already provided the Danish institution with everything they are capable of contributing in the field of oceanographic models, according to sources in the sector familiar with the process.

The PFA, the Association of pelagic freezer trawlers, has regretted the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) that definitively annuls the fishing agreement between the EU and Morocco: "This result has a significant impact on the future fishing activities of the EU pelagic freezer trawler sector." Its reaction thus joins that of other entities in the sector, such as Europêche and Cepesca.
The PFA points out that it "respects" the CJEU decision, but expresses its disappointment because it considers that it does not allow the development of "effectively managed fishing activities in West African waters, in accordance with EU sustainability standards."

The tide appears to be turning after a period of instability in Spain’s seafood industry.
On 3 October, Actemsa won court approval of a restructuring plan that will see the A Coruña, Spain-headquartered seafood firm avoid bankruptcy.
Actemsa, which operates a 12,000-square-meter processing plant as well as a canning facility in Brazil, filed a pre-bankruptcy notice on 27 October 2023, revealing EUR 114 million (USD 120.5 million) in debt as a result of struggles with overtstock and plunging tuna sales.

The Norwegian government has proposed allocating NOK 28 million ($2.63 million) in the 2025 state budget to combat the spread of humpback salmon, a species that has caused significant problems in Norwegian rivers.
Last year, 249,496 humpback salmon were removed from rivers using various methods, according to the State Administrator in Troms and Finnmark.

Whitefish fisheries – including pollock, cod, haddock and hake – remain at the forefront of the sustainable seafood market, with almost three quarters of the global whitefish catch engaged with the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) sustainable seafood programme at the end of 2023.
Pollock and cod are among the top 10 wild-caught marine species with the largest landings in 2021 – the latest year for which the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) provides data. According to the FAO, pollock accounts for 3.4 million tonnes of total marine fisheries production.
The upcoming International Conference on Harmful Algae (ICHA) will be held for the first time in Chile, in its 21st edition.
This event will be held in Punta Arenas, in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region, an area known for its unique biodiversity and scientific importance in the study of Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB). The region is ideal for this type of conference due to its natural characteristics and its historical and scientific relevance.
ICHA, organized by the International Scientific Society on Harmful Algae (ISSHA), is the world's leading conference on HAB. Its objective is to disseminate advances in scientific and technological knowledge on these blooms, bringing together an international audience of 500 experts, as well as decision makers from the public and private sectors.
A Local Organizing Committee, led by Dr. Leonardo Guzmán (IFOP) and composed of five subcommittees, is in charge of planning the conference, which will be held in 2025. International Conference on Harmful Algae (ISSHA). The main objective of this conference is to provide a forum to learn about the degree of advancement of scientific and technological knowledge on HABs (from molecular biology to the use of satellite images), which will be presented to an estimated international scientific audience of 500 people, as well as decision makers from both the public and private sectors.

This is the first vessel of Project 03142. The crew consists of 34 people, and the gross tonnage exceeds 1,200 tons.
On board there is equipment for processing fish into frozen products in cut and uncut form, as well as storage of finished products. The navigation area is unlimited, regular operation in small-crushed ice up to half a meter thick is possible.
The vessel will be used for longline fishing, which is one of the most environmentally friendly methods of fishing. The work process eliminates damage to the habitat of aquatic bioresources.
