Current Foods, a start-up that provides plant-based tuna and salmon, has raised $18 million (£14.7m) to support its smoked salmon launch into retail, expansion into the Japanese market, and continued product refinement.

San Francisco-based Current Foods, formerly called Kuleana (the Hawaiian word for “responsibility”), already sells plant-based tuna products, primarily to food service and fine dining customers, and presented its sliced smoked salmon analogue to the world at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York last week.

BioMar Group and Síldarvinnslan have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a modern high-tech aquafeed production facility in Iceland.

The Icelandic aquaculture industry has grown tenfold since 2010 and prides itself on a sustainability focus and increased organic production at sea. The newer land-based projects are taking advantage of the natural environmental conditions to reduce resource requirements by utilising geothermal sources.

New HMRC figures have shown that Scottish salmon is the UK’s biggest fresh food export but the sector is facing continued challenges following Covid and Brexit.

International sales of Scottish salmon were valued at £280million in the first half of 2022, with France accounting for more than half of the total. However, this was down by around 8 per cent compared to 2021, across both EU sales and non-EU sales.

Greenpeace has promised to step up their campaign of dumping boulder in marine protected areas around the UK coast despite the Marine Management Organisation pleas.

Greenpeace announced that its ship Arctic Sunrise will be travelling to the South West Deeps MPA in the coming weeks. The MPA is located 200 miles off the Land’s End peninsula.

The decision responds to a personal decision of Negueruela to dedicate himself to the development of new projects.

In the statement, the Argentinian Chamber of Jiggers Shipowners (CAPA) appreciates its good management and expresses its regret at its removal after 16 years at the helm "relentlessly fighting for the interests of its associates... ...always in pursuit of the unity and strengthening of the Chamber” and they conclude by wishing and auguring for Negueruela the greatest success in their new projects.

Among his most relevant works stand out the defense of squid fishing with jiggers against trawling, the beginning of the MSC Certification through a FIP (Fishing Improvement Projects, for its acronym in English) SQUID-CAPA and place on the national discussion table the issue of Mile 201 and IUU fishing (Unreported and Unregulated).

The decision is in line with the trend towards growing container turnover

Vladivostok Sea Fishing Port says it will cease handling metal scrap at its Berth 49. The berth will be converted into a yard for storage of containers by the end of the year. That will let decrease negative impact on the environment and adjacent residential areas.

The decision is in line with the trend towards growing container turnover.

Vladivostok Sea Fishing Port JSC is one of the leading ports in Russia’s Far East able to handle up to 5 million tonnes of cargo per year including more than 200,000 TEUs. It is located on the southern coast of the nonfreezing Zolotoi Rog Bay. The quay line of 10 berths which is 2,020 m long, 10 km of railway lines and 3 locomotives enable the company to handle 71 wagons per day.

Stockholm, Sweden-based Hooked Foods has begun its expansion of food production after its initial EUR 4.2 million (USD 4.3 million) and is aiming to raise an additional EUR 10 million (USD 10.1 million) in a Series A funding round to expand across Europe, The Vegan Review reported.

Hooked Foods is a plant-based seafood analog start-up company founded in 2019.

Technology provider AKVA’s risk appetite has waned for the aquaculture barge business, a segment that its chief executive described as being less profitable for the company.

The group made a one-time cost provision of 31 million NOK ($3.24 million) on its Q2 balance sheet due mainly to an ongoing barge project in Canada.

Salmon farmers in British Columbia have claimed recent statements issued to Vancouver media from anti-salmon farming campaigners are contrary to data and evidence.

The BC Salmon Farmers’ Association (BCSFA), which represents more than 70 businesses involved in British Columbia’s salmon sector, claimed veteran salmon industry opponent Bob Chamberlin had “stepped over the line with his latest inaccurate statements to media”.
