Seafood Industry Australia has absorbed the responsibilities of the National Aquaculture Council and launched a new aquaculture advisory committee.
SIA CEO Veronica Papacosta told SeafoodSource the NAC takeover is aimed at providing a united voice in Australia’s aquaculture sector, and that SIA’s resourcing and working relationship with the government will help the larger group better advocate for the seafood industry.

European fishing alliance underlines the importance of demersal fishing. An alliance of fishing organisations from 14 EU countries representing over 22 000 fishermen and 8 000 vessels, presented to Fisheries Commissioner Sinkevicius the importance and realities of demersal fishing activities across Europe. The European Union has wasted hundreds of millions of Euros on fishing licences for Morocco and the Western Sahara that few Spanish fishing vessels use according to a report in El Pais, a newspaper in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
The newspaper reports that the EU paid €52 million per year in exchange for fishing licences for 128 EU-registered fishing vessels.

Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the US posted strong growth in 2021, surpassing the $1 billion mark for the first time. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the General Department of Customs reported that as of 15 December 2021, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the US reached $1.02 billion. This is a 22 percent increase over the same period in 2020.
Government expert believes that the rapid growth recently seen in farmed salmon production in Iceland will slow in the coming years.
More than 46,000 tons of salmon were produced in Iceland last year, according to information from MAST, the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority. Production increased by more than 12,000 tons last year, that is, by 35 percent, and exceeded expected production by 3,000 tons.
