IN BRIEF - Feds declare East Coast herring fishery a disaster

Friday, November 26, 2021

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The herring fishing industry in the Northeast qualifies for federal assistance because its 2019 season has been declared a disaster.

The federal government has the ability to declare a “fishery disaster” when adverse circumstances in a fishery cause economic hardship. A recent scientific assessment of the herring population found that the species population has fallen, and tighter fishing quotas have made herring fishing more difficult.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the disaster declaration on Monday. The fishery will be eligible for disaster assistance, and some fishery-related businesses might also qualify for federal loans, the commerce department said.

Herring fishermen caught more than 200 million pounds of herring (90,718 MT) as recently as 2014, but the 2019 catch was less than 25 million (11,339 MT). The fishery is based mostly in Maine and Massachusetts.

The commerce department said the allocation of money will be determined soon.

IN BRIEF - Performance Team – a Maersk Company announces new cold chain facility in South Carolina

Friday, August 12, 2022

El Segundo, California: Performance Team – A Maersk Company has announced a new cold storage facility planned for Ridgeville, South Carolina to serve temperature-controlled goods, opening in Q1 2023.

The new facility will offer a strong value proposition to customers through supply chain simplification benefits, cold storage solutions, refrigerated inland trucking, blast/quick freezing, USDA meat inspections, boxing/repacking, and other value-added services.

The strong population growth near Charleston (the U.S. Southeast where Charleston is located is the fastest growing region, 25% faster than the 2nd fastest region, the West) provides much needed capacity for shippers. The new site will reach 80 million consumers within one day and 225 million consumers within two days.

The new site will comply with the company’s cold storage building sustainability standards. It will be certified LEED Gold and have rooftop solar, a CO2 cascade refrigeration system, LEDs and smart lighting, low-flow water devices, rainwater recapture, electric car charging, and use a virtual power purchase agreement for clean power to offset any grid power consumption.

By turning off a special gene with the CRISPR method, researchers at the Institute of Marine Research in Norway have created the world’s first salmon without gametes. The purpose has been to develop a farmed salmon that cannot mate with wild salmon if it escapes.

Now the researchers have followed such salmon throughout their entire lives (a so-called production cycle) to compare growth, signs of welfare and omega3 content with normal farmed salmon.
