The fisheries sector -which includes all activities related to extractive fishing, shellfish and aquaculture- remains one of the first agents of the Galician economy. According to the Instituto Galego de Estatística (IGE), in 2004 the turnover of this sector exceeded the barrier of 1,000 million euros.
In addition to direct billing, this activity stimulates the functioning of many other operators in Galicia. In fact, the Galician fisheries sector depends not only 25,700 more sailors, fish and shellfish usually fishing activities but also as workers in the canning industry, caterers or trade.
