Distribucion y Servicio D&S S.A. (Public, SCL:D&S) is a Chile-based company principally engaged in the distribution and sales of food. The Company operates 197 stores in Chile, such as supermarkets, hypermarkets and discount stores, as well as 10 commercial centers.
It has three divisions, such as Retail, Financial Services and Real Estate. The Retail Division is involved in the Company’s retail activities and operates through the hypermarkets Hiper Lider, supermarkets Express de Lider, Superbodega Acuenta and Ekono. The Financial Services Division offers credits through the credit card PRESTO. The Real Estate Division, through the Company’s subsidiary, Sociedad Anonima Inmobiliaria Terrenos y Establecimientos Comerciales SAITEC, develops and manages supermarkets, hypermarkets and commercial centers.
On 20 December 2008 Inversiones Australes Tres Limitada, a subsidiary of Walmart Stores Inc. agreed to buy D&S . The U.S. company, considered the largest retailer in the world, launched a tender offer (IPO) by the 100% of the company, offering U.S. $ 0.408 per share (about $ 259.488), the figure represented a premium of 37% over the average of the previous 30 days, and valued the company at U.S. $ 2,660 million. Tthe Ibanez family undertook initially Walmart to sell 23.4% of D&S, holding in that case 40% of the company. After two OPA, Walmart retained control of about 74, 61% of the compañy. On October 28, 2010, D&S announced the change of its name to Walmart Chile, question that was formalized on November 23
