Driven by a mutual passion for food and customer service, four wholesalers, Antoine Turmel, René Provost, Jean-Louis Lamontagne and J.-Arthur Tremblay, merged and founded the Couvrette & Provost group in 1969, which they renamed Provigo a year later.
The group decided to diversify and launched a retail sales operation. This resulted in the creation of three new banners in the food industry: Provigain, Provibec and Provipop. Business was blooming, and the group proceeded to acquire a series of supermarkets across Quebec (Les Aubaines alimentaires in 1972, Jato in 1975, Dionne in 1977, Dominion and Raymond in 1979, A&P Montréal in 1984 and Steinberg in 1992).
In 1979, Provigo became more visible on the Quebec market, as several of these supermarkets were regrouped under the Provigo name. This banner made its mark and rapidly became renowned for the quality of its service and the commitment of its merchants.
So Quick, so Good, and Always Close to You!
Today, Provigo numbers some 110 stores across the province and employs more than 5700 employees to serve you every day of the week.
Now, more than ever, grocery shopping at Provigo is so quick, so good!
