Promens' roots can be traced to 1984 when local investors in Dalvik in Northern Iceland founded Sæplast to produce double-walled, insulated plastic tubs for storing fish. Driven by demands from the Icelandic fisheries industry to develop a product that extended the quality lifetime of fish, Sæplast developed its revolutionary double-walled insulated plastic tub.
In 2004, the Icelandic investment company Atorka Group gained majority share and took Sæplast off the Iceland Stock Exchange. The following year Atorka formed the Promens Group, which became the parent company of Sæplast, which name was later changed to Promens Dalvik. Promens then acquired Bonar Plastics in 2005 and Elkhart Plastics, Inc. and Polimoon in 2006
July 2011- The investment company Horn hf, has acquired 99% of the shares in Promens as well as all other possessions of Atorka Group in Promens. Before the transaction Horn had a minority share in Promens. Horn is a subsidiary of Landsbanki, one of Iceland’s largest banks, owned by the government of Iceland.
In 2016 january Promens and saeplast acquired by a UK based company called RPC and the business operations at India and china closed down
