EUROPEAN UNION
Thursday, June 20, 2024

Europêche, the leading trade body representing the fishing industry in Europe, has formally requested Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to address the imminent vacancy that will be left by Commissioner Sinkevicius and ensure stability in fisheries governance during this transitional period.

In a letter addressed to President von der Leyen, Europêche underscored two critical requests for the Commission President’s immediate attention. First, the sector appreciated her decision to appoint a dedicated Fisheries Commissioner for the upcoming term, emphasising the need for a true balance between biodiversity conservation, a competitive fishing fleet, and food security.

Canada pushes back BC salmon farm transition; open net-pens to be banned from 2029

Existing salmon aquaculture licenses will be renewed for five years to ensure a successful transition, with stricter conditions on managing sea lice, reporting requirements, and monitoring of marine mammal interactions.

Canada will prohibit open-net salmon farms off the coast of British Columbia by mid-2029 to help protect the declining wild Pacific salmon populations, the federal government announced on Wednesday.

IN BRIEF - Los Lagos: Chile's second largest exporter region of non-traditional products

CHILE
Wednesday, June 19, 2024

In 2023, ProChile worked hand in hand with 5,936 companies, generating almost half a million jobs. Of these companies, more than 2 thousand are exporters, contributing 79% of the total exported by Chile during that year. This is equivalent to a figure of US$33,029 million dollars.

In this context, the Los Lagos Region stands out as the second largest exporter region of non-traditional products. But there's more: it was also ranked second among those that have a science-based innovation ecosystem. Quite an achievement. An example of this dynamism is that as of June 2024, more than 12 activities linked to export promotion have already been carried out.

Ricardo Arriagada, Regional Director ProChile Los Lagos

They range from the traditional seafood sectors - with participation in international fairs - to actions in the tourism sector, including Enexpro Global Solutions with aquaculture industry suppliers, the World Summit Awards WSA and the Dairy Sector Congress, among others.

Exports from the Los Lagos Region also had a positive first quarter of 2024. The increase of 1.3%, compared to the same period of the previous year, was mainly driven by the aquaculture sector, with the United States, Japan and Brazil being its main destinations.

Other Media | Industrias Pesqueras: Artificial Intelligence configures a new map for fishing

WORLDWIDE
Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the reality of economic sectors. Fishing is not far behind. For a few years now, the emergence of this computer branch has been a turning point in favor of improving knowledge of the oceans and their resources and, with this, has allowed advances in fisheries management, both for the fleet and for the regulatory bodies of their activity. Satlink, Zunibal and Marine Instruments are pioneering companies in the use of AI in fishing activity. For these companies, the application of this combination of algorithms in their solutions has led to an optimization of electronic observation, better discrimination of species and, in general, a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems, which translates into a better support for the fishing sector.

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

In 2023, Orizon Seafood, the Chilean fishing company that is the world leader in horse mackerel production and belongs to Nutrisco, recovered a total of 32,080 kg of fishing nets at the end of their useful life. These were recycled with the collaboration of Net Positiva, operated by the company Bureo Chile, who recycle them and transform them into raw materials that are used by well-known brands to make their products.

Thus, this collaboration made it possible to recycle the fishing nets and transform them into 100% traceable raw materials, which will be used to make Patagonia brand clothing, Costa sunglasses, Carver skateboards, Future Fins surf fins, Yenga board game or pieces of Trek bicycles, among other products.
