ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia and the National Fishery Products Quality Management Service (NFQS) of South Korea have agreed to collaborate in efforts to strengthen the quality assurance system for upstream and downstream fisheries in the region.
The collaboration between the two institutions is an implementation of the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) which has been in place since 2016.
“As part of the MRA, we agreed to carry out a joint inspection of the upstream-downstream quality and safety assurance system for fishery products,” said Head of the Marine and Fishery Products Quality Monitoring and Control Agency, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia, Ishartini in Jakarta, quoted on Wednesday.
KHONSA - A training programme on ‘Recent advances and scientific practices in fisheries and aquaculture’ was jointly organized by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB)-Northeast Regional Centre (NERC), Guwahati and department of fisheries at the NBF hall here on Tuesday.
Addressing the progressive fish farmers, DFDO S.K Jawal emphasized on the importance of sustainable fish farming in the district to bring about self-reliance in the fishery sector. He also encouraged fish farmers to co-operate with the fishery department to uplift the overall fishery development in the district in particular and the state as a whole.
KVK, Deomali SMS (fisheries) Phurin Songthing briefed about “Management practice in Aquaculture.” He also explained about the scientific method of pond preparation and various scientific management practices needed to be adopted for overall better production. He also emphasized on integrated fish farming practices for gaining multiple benefits from the same farm land.
Later during the programme, 5 progressive fish farmers were given drag nets under the scheme ‘Distribution of Farm Machineries/Equipments (60% subsidy) under BE 2023-24.’ (DIPRO)
Following the commitment assumed by the Regional Government of Atacama with the artisanal fishing and aquaculture sector of the region, the agreement was signed for the program “Transfer of Productive Promotion for Artisanal Fishing and Small-Scale Aquaculture in the Atacama Region”, which is developed and financed jointly by the Regional Government and the National Institute for Sustainable Development of Artisanal Fishing and Small-Scale Aquaculture (Indespa).
This program, which will have a budget of almost 1.4 billion pesos (US$ 1.5M) to be distributed over 24 months, aims to increase the productive and/or commercial capacities of artisanal fishermen, aquaculturists and/or their organizations in Atacama through projects for equipment, infrastructure, training and/or relevant technical assistance, thus benefiting a total of 4,277 people who work in the coastal sector of the region, of which 19 are dedicated to aquaculture.
The Governor of Atacama was present at the signing; Miguel Cargas Correa, the National Director of Indespa; Leonardo Llanos Huerta, the Seremi of Economy, Development and Tourism; Makarena Arias Vargas and representatives of the various coves, unions and organizations of artisanal fishermen and aquaculturists from the three provinces of Atacama, who were enthusiastic about the initiative.

Mowi, the world’s largest salmon farmer and processor, is set to unveil plans to increase salmon production from 500,000 tonnes to 600,000 tonnes annually by 2029.
The plans along with an ambitious cost-saving target of EUR 300-400 million, are being unveiled at its Capital Markets Day in Trøndelag, Norway, today, Thursday 26 September.

The E.U. has opened 12 time-limited import quotas for Norwegian seafood, including mackerel, herring, and wild-caught shrimp, as part of a wider agreement reached between Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and the E.U.
In tandem with overall negotiations on European Economic Area (EEA) funds, Norway and the E.U. have revised their joint fisheries protocol that ran from 2014 to 2021, with the new agreement now covering the period between 1 May 2021 and 30 April 2028.

The Shetland subsidiary of salmon producer Scottish Sea Farms (SSF) made an operating loss of £4.3 million last year, compared with an operating profit of £23.1m the year before, although the 2022 included £11.7m from the sale of five marine sites to Sutherland salmon farmer Loch Duart.
Turnover for SSF’s Shetland division last year was £51.6m, a decrease of 45% on the £93.7m in revenue made in the previous year, SSF Shetland’s newly published annual report shows.

The Japanese government is set to formalize a grant agreement with the Coalition Government for the purchase of a fishery research vessel and ice-making machines.
This procurement, valued at $10.6 million is part of Japan’s Economic Social Development Programme and aims to support Fiji’s sustainable fisheries management efforts.
At a signing ceremony later today, Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji Rokuichiro Michii and Minister for Fisheries and Forests Alitia Bainivalu will finalize the grant.

According to a statement from the Japanese Embassy, the assistance aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan which prioritizes the sustainable management and protection of marine resources.
The project also supports Japan’s free and open Indo-Pacific policy which aims to enhance regional cooperation and development. The initiative consists of three key components.
First, a new fishery research vessel will be procured. The 16-meter vessel will be equipped with a 500kW inboard engine, have a three-tonne fish storage capacity and accommodate 10 passengers.
It will play a critical role in monitoring and regulating fisheries along Fiji’s barrier reef system, conducting fish stock assessments, marine environment evaluations and supporting capacity-building efforts.
