Santa Cruz, California-based non-profit sustainable seafood consultancy FishWise and the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST), the industry standard for digitally interoperable traceability in seafood, have established a new partnership to promote the widespread adoption of traceability best practices in seafood supply chains.

The two organisations aim to promote the implementation of interoperable, digitised traceability systems and the adoption of the GDST standard across public and private sectors.

These are enterprising fishermen, who established Atlantic Seafish AS with older vessels, before investing a few years ago in the first new vessel in the Norwegian fleet to take advantage of changes in regulations allowing new gear combinations.

A major Japanese food processing company has begun selling ‘tuna sashimi’ made from plant-based ingredients to domestic restaurants. The aroma and texture of the red meat of tuna are reproduced, and it can be eaten as sashimi.

As the decline of marine resources becomes a global problem, the development of “alternative seafood” using soybeans and other ingredients is growing.

Osaka-based NH Foods Ltd. has focused on tuna, which is one of the top domestic purchases among seafood products.

Kyokuyo has taken a majority stake in Northseafood Holland – a Dutch seafood processing company. The strategic move from the Tokyo-listed seafood company seems to be part of a wider strategy to establish an overseas processing presence. Founded in 1937, and posessing a strong Japanese affiliate base which includes several seafood processing companies, Kyokuyo now sets sights on the international market.

On the 21st, Toyo Reizo (Koto-ku, Tokyo) announced that Executive Officer Yasuo Mitani (former president of Sanyo Foods) was appointed as President and Representative Director in charge of internal control and audits on the 20th. Yasuo Mitani (Mitani Yasuo) was appointed as the salmon and trout team leader of the Mitsubishi Corporation Fisheries Department in March 2015. In April 2016, when the salmon and trout division was established, he became the processing and sales team leader of the same department. IN BRIEF - Trade balance in fishery products in surplus at TND 156.2 end of April 2024

The trade balance in fishery products showed a surplus of TND 156.2 at the end of April 2024.

This surplus is up 87.7% compared with that at the end of April 2023 (TND 388), according to the monthly newsletter of the National Observatory of Agriculture (ONAGRI), published on Saturday.

Exports of fishery products totalled 11 thousand tonnes worth TND 266.5 at the end of April 2024, up 32.9% in value and 6.8% in quantity compared with the same month in 2023.

ONAGRI also reported a 24.5% rise in export prices compared with April 2023 (24.2 D/KG). The most exported species are fish (6 thousand tonnes), canned and semi-canned goods (2.2 thousand tonnes) and shellfish (1.8 thousand tonnes).

Tunisian exports of fish products go to 42 destinations. Italy is the leading importer (29%), followed by Spain (23%), Libya, the United Arab Emirates and Japan (7%).

On May 19, news shocked the Peruvian fishing sector, revealing the excessive permissiveness with which PRODUCE sanctioned the Chinese vessel, the Tian Xiang, with the ridiculous sum of 250 soles for apparently having fished illegally in the Peruvian sea.

This case, along with other complaints spread by artisanal fishermen on social platforms such as Facebook and Tik Tok, as well as by organizations such as the National Society of Industries and the National Society of Artisanal Fishing of Peru (SONAPESCAL), appear to be the result of possible negligence by the previous efforts of the Ministry of Production.

The II Conference against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing in A Coruña ???? Organized by Pesca España, an association created by several fishing producer organizations to defend the sector and promote fish consumption, the aim was to raise awareness about the problem of the entry of illicitly extracted products into the community market.

The IUU, acronym in English for illegal, unregulated and unregulated fishing, carried out without a license, is considered to be that which "does not observe national or international standards, which is not registered or subject to controls and which continues to enter the market of the EU
