Pia completed her Diplom (BSc. + MSc) in applied Computing Science and Biology in 1999 at the University of Bielefeld, Germany.
She then worked as a software engineer for Allianz Corp., Stuttgart, Germany, before starting a PhD in 2003. She received her PhD on modelling coral reef fish and benthic community structures in 2006 from Newcastle University, UK, and at the same time completed an MSc in Tropical Coastal Management. During her PhD she was involved as a consultant in a project using artificial neural networks for gene mapping.
Currently Pia is investigating the use of Otolith trace element analysis for stock identification and migration and stock assessment of the squid Loligo gahi in Falkland waters.
