Research Interests

Paul’s current research interests are the reproductive biology, age and growth, population dynamics, population structure and assessment of fish species inhabiting the waters around the Falkland Islands and the southern Patagonian Shelf. He also has a very keen interest marine parasites and their use as biological tags for investigating the population structure and migration of fish hosts. Paul has been and continues to be a part of a number of trophic studies of marine fish around the Falkland Islands and is interested in the environmental and fisheries impact on trophic structures in communities. Paul is also interested in the shallow marine ecology of Falkland Islands’ coasts and runs the Shallow Marine Surveys Group.

Background and Qualifications

In his current position Paul is responsible for the biology, fisheries monitoring and assessment of the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) red cod (Salilota australis) and kingclip fisheries in the Falkland Islands. Paul is also responsible for inshore fisheries which include the Falklands mullet (Eleginops maclivinus), false kingcrab (Paralomis granulosa) and sea urchin (Loxechinus albus).

Paul has a B.Sc. (hons) in Marine Biology from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Aberdeen University. Paul’s Ph.D. was on the parasite ecology of the Patagonian toothfish and he used their parasites as tools for examining their population structure around the Southern Ocean. Paul has also worked on the fisheries biology of Patagonotothen ramsayi and Eleginops maclovinus for the department.

Paul has over 30 peer reviewed publications of which twenty of the most recent are listed below.
