1985 – MSc in ichthyology and aquaculture, Kaliningrad State Technical University, Russia (“Reproductive system functioning in male squid Illex argentinus”) 1995 – PhD in hydrobiology, Kaliningrad State Technical University, Russia (“Reproductive strategies in squid family Ommastrephidae: fecundity, duration of embryogenesis and mortality”) 2006 - DSc in hydrobiology, Russian Federal Research Institute of Fishery and Oceanography (VNIRO), Moscow (“Ecology of cephalopod reproduction”)
Vlad is currently working on the fisheries and oceanographic databases using both fishery and research data for purposes of investigations of fish and squid biology and stock management. Also he is involved into a range of project including studies of feeding and reproduction of the different fish and squid species around the Falkland Islands.
In 1985-1998 Vlad worked in the laboratory of commercial invertebrates of Atlantic Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (AtlantNIRO, Kaliningrad, Russia) as a scientist. He studied the reproductive biology and fisheries of the different commercial squids and octopods in the Atlantic and North Pacific. Since 1995 he also worked on the assessment of small pelagic fish stocks off Northwest Africa as a chief scientist on several expeditions. In 1996 he participated (as one of two allotted scientists) in the first round-the-world cruise onboard the tallship “Kruzenshtern” dedicated to 300 years jubilee of the Russian fleet. In 1999-2000 he worked as an observer in Falkland Islands Fisheries Dept conducting research on the reproduction of the squid, Loligo gahi, as well as dietary studies on finfish and elasmobranchs. In 2001-2002 he returned to AtlantNIRO and resumed investigations of pelagic resources of Morocco and Mauritania. In January–March 2002 Vlad was invited by the University of Izmir, Turkey to study reproduction of cephalopods in the Aegean Sea. In July 2002 he returned to the Falkland Islands as an observer, and since 2004 has worked as the Data Analyst.
He has authored 104 publications, the most important of which are:
