Welcome to the
Whistling Pig Gift Shop
Your source for Maine-made fine Arts,
crafts and gifts, and Eastport Lobster and Fish Company memorabilia
Our Magnificent Location
The Eastport Lobster and Fish Company is proud to offer the gift shop with
arguably the most incredible panoramic view in America. Situated on the
end of our wharf, The Whistling Pig gazes across to Canada's famous historic
Campobello Island over the deep blue Passamaquoddy Bay. Surrounding our
cove is also Deer Island, Cherry Island and Indian Island, with mainland
New Brunswick seen as a quiet blue haze on a sunny day. Come shop and watch
the boats go by.
A Finely Crafted And Selected Inventory
It's not just the view that's so compelling. It's also the fact that we've
scoured our local area and reached out to greater Maine for skilled artisans
and craftspeople to fill our shop with treasures. We carry hand-dyed quilted
wall hangings, woven woolen blankets, braided rugs, hand-made walnut and
oak humidors, prints of local paintings, black and white photography of
local scenery, stained glass lamps, pottery, books, gourmet gift items,
countless objects made from natural materials from our rich seashore, and
much, much more!
For The Kids
We haven't forgotten the little ones! Besides handmade candy in the shapes
of lobsters, moose, scallops, and other unexpected forms, we have children's
print luggage, "puddle pants", tons of beautifully illustrated
books by Maine authors, and our favorite, bug houses!
And If That Isn't enough...
We carry an extensive line of Eastport Lobster and Fish Company hats, aprons,
shirts, limited edition mugs, lobster bibs, and other Eastport memorabilia.
Stop here also for tide tables, maps, and tickets for whale watching tours
and charter boat rides leaving daily from our wharf!
Where Did Our Name Come From?
We're sure you are curious about how our gift shop got its name. Well, here's
the story. Back in the 19th century, there were as many as 16 sardine canning
factories in Eastport. Each factory had its own distinctive whistle to call
workers to the workplace when the fish were in and workers were needed.
It was also used to signify quitting time. Each factory whistle had its
own distinctive sound so that its workers could make the proper identification
and respond. The factory that stood on our historic site was named "The
Whistling Pig" because - you guessed it - of its unique pig-like sound.
