INTEGRAL is active in the
following technology fields and resulting applications:
REFRIGERATION TECHNOLOGY
"WATER AS REFRIGERANT" - A
NEW AGE IN REFRIGERATION HAS BEGUN
"Water", along with air, hydrocarbons, ammonia and carbon dioxide is the most environmentally benign refrigerant, completely safe (incombustible, non toxic) and generally most suitable for refrigeration technology.
Refrigeration plants operated
with water are not sensitive to contamination, have a constant efficiency
and can be operated as chillers down to 0.5°C or as heat pumps. The
production of ice is also possible.
"Water as Refrigerant"
is the ultimate solution to refrigeration. Together with complete environmental
friendliness (no ozone depletion, no global warming) comes a superior COP
(coefficient of performance), unmatched by any of the "classic"
systems.
2.000 tons Ice/Day Plant with "Water
as Refrigerant" for
Mine Cooling in Botswana (7 MW Ref. Capacity)
Refrigeration plants with
"Water as Refrigerant" can be operated using electricity (ECOCHILLER,
ECO-VIM) as well as (waste) heat or (waste) steam (ECOJET). Plants using
this "state of the art" technology are already in service throughout
the world. Plants with capacities from approx. 150 kW up to some 3.000
kW refrigeration capacity per unit are available. The newly developed water
vapour compressor INTEGRAL TM is the key to accomodate space restrictions,
and at the same time is competitively priced.
Such refrigerating systems
are simple, robust and well suited to supply cooling for buildings, thermal
energy storage systems, mine-, tunnel- and district cooling as well as
industrial applications including food, fish and meat industries etc..
Where a chiller is an option, "Water as Refrigerant" can do the
same job only better. The water quality is of no importance since "empty"
vessels are used.
WATER AS SECONDARY REFRIGERANT - BINARY
ICE TECHNOLOGY
Binary Ice is a suspension
of very small ice crystals in an aquaeous solution. The suspension remains
liquid and is therefore pumpable. The energy density of Binary Ice is many
times greater than that of cold water or brine. Heat transfer and transport
properties are at least equivalent to conventional refrigerants (yesterday´s
CFCs, today´s H-CFCs, HFCs and Ammonia). Binary Ice is therefore
not just another secondary refrigerant but a special "refrigerant"
in a class of its own!
Binary Ice can be generated
in two ways: Small and medium capacities with FLO-ICE technology, medium
and large capacities with Vacuum Ice technology. The system is shown below:
Binary Ice (FLO-ICE and Vacuum
Ice) can be generated, circulated and/or stored in closed systems or can
be harvested for direct use. The applications are therefore numerous and
can be summarized briefly as follows:
AIR CONDITIONING
Air Conditioning and Space Cooling
Air Dehumidification
Retrofit of Underperforming Plants (Performance, Pipework, Heat Exchangers)
District Cooling, Thermal Energy Storage
COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
Supermarkets
Cold Stores, Cold Rooms
FOOD INDUSTRY
Quickcooling of Fruits, Vegetables, Packed Food
Meat processing: Boning Rooms, Poultry, Skins and Hides
Dairy Products, Breweries, Soft Drink Industry, Juice Concentration
Fish Industry (on Board, on Land, Transport) - Ice made e.g. from Sea Water
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
Cooling of Tools, Jigs
Chemical Processes
Compressed Air
Concrete Cooling (Exothermal Energy)
Mine- and Tunnel-Cooling
ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS
Replacement of Refrigerants
Desalination of (Sea)Water
Separation of Oil-/Water-Mixtures

Capacity
Bottom: Ice Concentration Controller ICON Mk. III
FLO-ICE utilizes a scraped
surface heat exchanger. The fluid contains a (harmless) additive which
makes it possible to produce liquid ice at any temperature between -1 °C
and -40 °C. Any common refrigerant may be used including "natural"
substances such as ammonia and hydrocarbons. It is also possible to combine
a FLO-ICE maker with an absorption unit if heat is available.
VACUUM ICE makes use of "Water
as Refrigerant" which is described in more detail above. A very small
amount of an additive (in the ppm-range) is needed to keep the Vacuum Ice
liquid. Vacuum Ice can be generated with electricity or heat (steam).
Binary Ice can be pumped
over long distances and is therefore suitable to provide "district
cooling" with a centrally located plant. The energy density enables
significant savings to be made in pipe diameters, pumping costs and/or
heat exchanger surfaces. Binary Ice is an excellent cold energy storage
medium. Installed capacity is also reduced avoiding the use of peak demand
electricity and high cooling levels can be achieved economically.
INTEGRAL supplies ice generators,
ice plants and complete systems with a wide range of capacities. The presently
available range is shown below:
FLO-ICE is a Joint Venture
between INTEGRAL Energietechnik GmbH, Flensburg/Germany and Solmecs FLO-ICE
Systems Ltd., London/UK and Toronto/Canada. FLO-ICE is licensed to different
partners in different countries where local manufacture takes place.
Vacuum Ice is presently marketed
through INTEGRAL in close cooperation with business partners and agents
accomodating local conditions.
ENERGY TECHNOLOGY
(WASTE) HEAT DRIVEN POWER STATIONS -
ORC TECHNOLOGY
The most cost effective solution
to utilise low-grade (waste) heat is the direct utilisation in the form
of heat. However, in most cases we find that (waste) heat has already been
recovered for thermal use. ORC plants allow the conversion of surplus waste
heat for the generation of electricity, again using "Water" or
other natural working fluids.
Provided that the generation
of electricity through (waste) heat recovery allows a high degree of annual
utilisation the process will provide an attractively short pay-back period
(typical amortisation 2 - 3 years).
Not only waste heat but other
low temperature energy sources can be utilised such as solar heat or geo-thermal
energy. The lower economical temperature limit is approx. 100 °C -
in special cases this can be less.
ORC-technology is the low-temperature
equivalent to conventional thermal power plants operating at standard (high
temperature) conditions. ORC plants are already in service utilising heat
from air compressors, waste heat from incinerator plants and from pressurized
hot water sources before being fed to a district heating system. The capacity
of ORC modules lies between 25 kWel. - 1.000 kWel. so far. Higher capacities
are, however, possible.
(WASTE) HEAT DRIVEN REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS
(Waste) heat can also be
used to produce cold energy. This can be done with ECOJET Chillers/Ice
Makers or ECOSORB Absorption plants. ECOJET again works with "Water"
as the refrigerant, ECOSORB utilises either water or ammonia, depending
on the temperature range.
ECOJET refrigeration plants
are extremely simple without mechanical components except pumps. Such installations
are performing very reliably without need for maintenance or repair over
many years. In addition to waste heat, also solar heat or geothermal energy
can be used where available.
