The HULL Fish Merchants Protection Association represents the interest of over 65
fish merchants and procesors, and embraces almost 100% of the buying force in Hull.
Its membership has been strengthened due to the co-operation between Selling Agents, Hull
Fish Landing Co. Ltd. and this Association. A close liason is also maintained with the
Hull City Council on industrial and economic issues.
The
volume of fish prepared and sold trough Hull's daily fish auction places it as one of the
premier markets in the U.K.
The size and popularity of the Hull auction is a significant factor in creating stability
to market prices.
Over two thirds of all U.K. imports of fresh Icelandic fish are handled through the Hull
market; this together with the fish arriving overland from the U.K. fishing areas, by sea
from Hull's own deep water trawlers and other European countries contributes to
maintaining the port's premier U.K. position as a fish merchanting centre.
Fish is transported from Hull on an overnight basis' to inland markets and all types of
trader looking for fresh, regular and reliable supplies.
The Hull Fish Auction Market on Albert Dock, the largest of its kind in the U.K.
has been refurbished and was the first large market to meet the latest European
legislation on food handling hygiene. This work was carried out by the owners of the
market, Associated British Ports (ABP), due to efforts of their managing agents,
the Hull Fish Landing Company (HFL) and the Hull Fish Merchants Protection
Association (HFMPA).
Hull Fish Landing manage the auction facilities and are responsible for the general organisation of the Fish Market. They also have responsability for the security and cleanliness of the Fish Dock Area.
