PORT AUTHORITIES
Situated on the Lancashire coast, 38km north of Preston at the mouth
of the River Wyre, Fleetwood has established
itself as on of the UK's major ports for ro-ro traffic to and from Northern
Ireland.Operated
by P&O Pandoro Ltd, Fleetwood's 5.6ha
ro-ro terminal runs a twice-daily service to Larne. Specially designed
vessels of up to 109 trailer capacity carry a variety of wheeled cargoes
to Northern Ireland via the terminal's two lane, 180-tonne capacity linkspan
which enables vessels to be turned round in under four hours. Pandoro has
priority use of this common-user facility.
Also in the harbour, outside the enclosed dock is the Isle of Man Passenger Terminal. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company operates a summer service on the route between Fleetwood and Douglas.
Fleetwood has been a major fishing port
for 90 years. With over 180m of Quay frontage, Fleetwood's
newly refurbished
fish auction hall handles around 5,000 tonnes of fish every year. Approximately
half are direct lndings, with the remainder moved overland from Scottish
and other ports for marketing and processing locally. Other facilities
include a cold store, modern ice plant and high-capacity ship slipway.
The Fleetwood port estate is currently
undergoing major changes following the granting of outline planning prmission
for the comprehensive redevelopment by Associated
British Ports Holdings PLC of 28ha of land around the Wyre Dock-
Fleetwood Harbour Village. To date the scheme
features a major retail multiple outlet, adjacent to the 6ha Freeport Fleetwood
shopping and leisure complex. Further retail and residential development
is scheduled. The Harbour Village will complement the busy 300 berth marina.
