China and the United States, the two largest global markets for white-fleshed fish, have shown signs of recovery in their demand for pangasius from Vietnam in the final months of the year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Vietnam remains the second-largest supplier of white-fleshed fish, mainly pangasius, to both countries, with frozen fillets being the primary product exported.

Recovery in the US Market

In the first half of 2024, Vietnamese whitefish exports to the US reached over $184 million, representing a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, Chinese whitefish exports to the US totaled $357 million, a decrease of 17% year-over-year. In 2023, China was the largest supplier of whitefish to the US, with total exports valued at $775 million, accounting for 44% of the US's total whitefish imports. Vietnam followed as the second-largest supplier, exporting nearly $330 million worth of whitefish, or 19% of the US's total whitefish imports.

Recovery in the Chinese Market

As of the end of July 2024, Russia remained the largest supplier of whitefish to China, with exports valued at nearly $625 million, a 21% decline from the previous year. Vietnam ranked as the second-largest supplier, with $162 million worth of whitefish exports in the first seven months of 2024, marking a 22% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. In 2023, Russia led the market with over $1.1 billion in whitefish exports to China, accounting for 62% of the country's total imports, followed by Vietnam with $339 million, representing 19% of China's total whitefish imports.

Positive Outlook for Vietnam's Pangasius Exports

China and the US remain vital markets for Vietnam's pangasius export industry. The recent signs of recovery and growth, coupled with favorable conditions, provide a solid foundation for the continued expansion of Vietnam's pangasius exports to these key markets in the latter months of 2024.
