Enrique Sánchez Sánchez, President of the Yucatan delegation of the National Chamber of the Fishing and Aquaculture Industry, reported that an estimated 6,000 to 6,500 tons of octopus were captured from August 1 to September 4. They are currently awaiting official figures to confirm the exact total, according to the Yucatan Times.

He noted that the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fishing (CONAPESCA) has yet to release official data on the octopus catch. However, based on reports from both the social and industrial sectors, it is believed that the capture has already reached between 6,000 and 6,500 tons.

Sánchez Sánchez also mentioned that larger vessels are preparing to head out to sea this weekend and are expected to return to the shores in about two weeks, bringing in more octopus. There is optimism that they will achieve significant volumes of the species.

He explained that the price for a kilo of octopus remains between 110 and 120 pesos. If the supply increases, prices may drop slightly, but they still remain favorable for both the social and industrial sectors, who are pleased with the start of the season.

Finally, Sánchez Sánchez stated that they are in discussions with business partners in Europe and the United States to export octopus to those markets, hoping to secure advantageous economic agreements. Meanwhile, octopus is being sold in both the national and local markets.
