The Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources released data on the national marine economy for the first half of the year, showing that domestic marine product output increased by 4.7% year-on-year, with mariculture output increasing by 6.0%. The ultra-large vessel “Guoxin No. 1 2‑2” completes its first commercial on-board harvest with 12 tonnes of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout, marking a milestone in offshore mobile aquaculture.

The first commercial harvest of salmon produced aboard the mobile vessel “国信1号2‑2” (Guoxin No. 1 2‑2) marks a turning point for Chinese salmon farming and opens a new frontier for offshore aquaculture. After nearly six months of grow-out, the vessel harvested around 3,000 specimens, equivalent to approximately 12 tonnes, of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The fish were introduced in November 2025 through a combined land- and sea-based production system.

Chinese state and technical sources present the outcome as the first commercial production of salmonids on an ultra-large mobile vessel. The claim should be attributed directly to the project, as an independent international audit has not yet taken place to establish it as a formal world record.

A vessel designed to track water temperature

The “Guoxin 1 2‑2”, operated by the state-owned Qingdao Guoxin group, is an aquaculture vessel with a displacement of 150,000 tonnes. It features 15 tanks with a total culture volume of nearly 100,000 m³, with each tank exceeding 6,000 m³. Its intake system draws water from depths of 30 to 50 meters and exchanges it 16 to 18 times per day.

The ship can move seasonally along the Chinese coast to seek water temperatures between 10 and 16 °C, the optimal thermal range for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), while steering clear of typhoons, red tides, and other adverse environmental events. Deep-water intake reduces exposure to pollution, parasites, and diseases. According to Chinese scientific reports, the batch was certified free of parasites, antibiotics, and drug residues, making it suitable for raw consumption.

From experiment to commercial product

The significance of the milestone lies not only in the volume of 12 tonnes, but in the fact that the fish completed a full cycle and successfully reached the market. This allows for the evaluation of key operational variables including survival, growth, quality, processing, distribution, and market acceptance against imported salmon.

Industry sources cited a survival rate close to 99.7% in the first batch of smolts, a figure provided by the project that still requires independent verification. Meanwhile, Qingdao Guoxin indicated that its three aquaculture vessels could reach a combined annual capacity exceeding 10,000 tonnes, a figure that must be viewed as declared capacity rather than proven production.

A key piece of the “blue granary” strategy

China still relies on imports to supply a large share of its domestic seafood market, particularly salmonids. Offshore production aims to reduce this dependency and transform naval engineering, automation, and aquaculture into an exportable industrial platform.

The project forms part of the expansion of the "great blue granary" strategy, based on vessels, deep-water cages, genetics, sensors, and cold chain infrastructure. Official reports indicate that marine production grew by 4.7% and marine aquaculture by 6% during the first half of 2026.

The challenge of profitability

While the harvest demonstrates initial technical feasibility, it does not yet prove that the model is cost-competitive against established producers in Norway, Chile, Scotland, or land-based RAS facilities. The main economic questions center on energy consumption, pumping and oxygenation requirements, fuel costs, naval maintenance, biosecurity, and the final cost per kilogram.

Seasonal movement allows access to optimal water temperatures, but it adds substantial navigation and logistical expenses. The ultimate test will be repeating the cycle at larger scales with stable profit margins.

Impact on the global market

With an initial harvest of 12 tonnes, the project does not alter the global supply balance for salmonids. However, it accelerates technological competition in mobile tanks, deep-water intake, automation, genetics, nutrition, sensors, and oxygen systems. Furthermore, it could drive demand for foreign equipment suppliers and foster new Chinese investments in farming species such as salmon, yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), grouper (Epinephelinae), and whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei).

The milestone serves as a clear industrial signal: China has shown that a mobile vessel can complete a salmonid production cycle and deliver commercial product to the market. The next threshold will be scaling this operation to thousands of tonnes while maintaining commercial profitability.
