The city of Maoming, located in Guangdong province and internationally recognized as the tilapia capital of China, is accelerating the international dispatch of its aquatic products through a combination of higher volume, advanced industrial processing, and rigorous digital traceability control.

During the first half of 2026, its tilapia exports reached 74,000 tonnes, representing a significant year-on-year increase of 51.8%, according to data released by Zhanjiang Customs and the General Administration of Customs of China. This figure places Maoming as the Chinese city with the highest volume of tilapia exported during the period.

Signals of industrial dynamism gained visibility as processing plants in the Yangmei area, within the Maoming-Huazhou industrial park, operated at full capacity. Dozens of tonnes of fish are processed daily in these facilities under an automated workflow covering reception, grading, weighing, IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) rapid freezing, and low-temperature packaging for subsequent maritime shipment.

Accelerated growth and industrial integration

The expansion recorded in 2026 extends a marked upward trajectory. During the first quarter, tilapia exports stood at around 32,000 tonnes, up 39.2% from the same period of the previous year. In monetary terms, the Municipal Government of Maoming reported an export value for that first quarter of approximately 517 million yuan (US$ 72 million), reflecting a 51.1% increase.

The alignment between strong volume growth and rising foreign exchange earnings indicates that expansion does not depend solely on higher market quotes, but on a higher degree of industrial processing. Processing plants have diversified their offerings into fillets, portions, whole frozen fish, and ready-to-cook products, allowing them to serve different commercial channels and increase value added per tonne.

Currently, annual tilapia exports from the city exceed a value of 2 billion yuan (US$ 279 million). In fact, in 2025, Maoming achieved first place nationally in China by tilapia export value, consolidating a cluster whose annual production exceeds 280,000 tonnes—nearly one-seventh of the country's total production and 25% of Chinese global shipments of this species.

Integrated production chain and full resource utilization

The Maoming cluster boasts a farming area of about 260,000 mu (approximately 17,300 hectares) and more than 3,000 registered aquaculture farms to supply the export industry. Harvested raw material is transported to processing plants across Guangdong, where the fish (Oreochromis niloticus) is processed into lines for both export and domestic consumption.

The operational strategy targets complete resource utilization. Meat, skin, scales, bones, and viscera are directed to various industrial lines ranging from processed foods to ingredients, collagen, and by-products. This full utilization yields a higher economic return per unit and helps cushion operational cost pressures in feed, energy, refrigerated storage, and transport.

Furthermore, the industry has diversified its trade portfolio to more than 70 countries and territories. Although the United States remains a relevant market, shipments are moving with growing strength toward Mexico, Canada, the European Union, Russia, the Andean Community, and emerging markets in Africa and Southeast Asia, reducing dependence on a single destination.

Sanitary and digital control as a commercial advantage

The export surge is backed by a structural reform in the sanitary control system. Zhanjiang Customs implemented a collective registration model for supplier farms, already applied in Gaozhou and Huazhou across an area of 95,000 mu (around 6,300 hectares).

Through the digital system "渔省事" (Yú Shěng Shì), customs authorities and companies record real-time information on fingerling origin, feed used, treatments applied, and quality analyses. Plants can consult raw material history online prior to entry, while the digitization of supply certificates has reduced administrative processing time by more than 80%. This framework aims to meet strict requirements from the US FDA and the European Commission regarding drug residues, safety, and traceability.

Implications for the international market and competitors

The acceleration of Maoming reinforces China's competitive position in the global frozen tilapia market. The 51.8% growth in first-half volume will increase the availability of processed fillets and cuts in North America and Latin America, particularly in supermarket retail and foodservice channels seeking high-yield, competitively priced proteins.

This industrial scale and logistical efficiency exert direct pressure on other producing countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil, Egypt, Ecuador, and Honduras, which compete for the same market shares. China's advantage lies in vertical integration, automated cutting capacity, proximity to massive port infrastructure, and an established network of export-approved plants.

However, the continuity of this momentum will depend on the industry's ability to manage freight rate volatility, absorb feed raw material costs, and maintain consistent sanitary standards across thousands of fish farms to avoid regulatory hurdles at destination ports.
