Russian fleet catches remain at historic levels during the first half of the year, with walleye pollock accounting for 54% of the national volume.

According to the industry monitoring system of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo), as of July 6, Russian fishermen caught 2,446.1 thousand tons of aquatic bioresources.

In the first half of 2026, walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) accounted for approximately 54% of the Russian catch. The catch reached 1.26 million tons, virtually unchanged from the record-breaking 2025. Russian fishermen are currently fishing in the Bering Sea, where catches have reached 281,000 tons. According to forecasts from the Pollock Catchers Association (PCA), pollock catch in 2026 will reach approximately 2 million tons.

As of June 30, pollock catch in the Sea of Okhotsk totaled approximately 812,000 tons, in the Bering Sea281,000 tons, and in the Kuril Islands128,300 tons. Another 40,000 tons were caught in other areas. The gap between these figures and the record-breaking 2025 is only slight – less than 1.2%.

"Currently, the main fishery is located in the second-most important pollock fishing area in Russia – the West Bering Sea zone. Specialized fishing there began on May 15, and over the past month and a half, fishermen have caught 123,000 tons – 2% more than in the same period last year. Since the beginning of the year, the catch in this area has reached 189,000 tons, and approximately 30% of the quota in this area has already been captured. This interim result was largely influenced by the fact that fishing in this area was active in January and February, when the catch amounted to 66,000 tons. Currently, 99 vessels are operating in the West Bering Sea zone, including 55 large-capacity vessels and 44 medium-capacity vessels," said PCA President Alexey Buglak. According to him, the increase in catch in May and June is due to the increased fleet size, although the fishing situation remains weak. In May and June, the average catch per day for large-capacity vessels did not exceed 85 tons, significantly lower than last year. Nevertheless, the association expects that 85-90% of the quota in this area will be filled by the end of the season.

On October 15, the "B" fishing season in the Sea of Okhotsk begins. Fishermen expect to use 90-95% of the remaining quota for Sea of Okhotsk pollock—approximately 230,000-240,000 tons.

According to PCA forecasts, by the end of the year, given favorable fishing conditions, the pollock catch volume in all fishing areas could reach approximately 2 million tons, which will fully meet the needs of the domestic market and realize export potential.

As a reminder, pollock is Russia's main commercial resource, accounting for over 45% of the national catch. In the first half of the year, this fish species accounted for approximately 54% of Russian fishermen's catch.
