Alaska’s 2026 commercial salmon harvest through July 4 continued to trail the 2025 catch, with the sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) harvest down 29% year-to-date and the smaller keta (Oncorhynchus keta) harvest down 73%.

In Bristol Bay – the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery – the catch was down 40% from 2025. In 2024 and 2025, Statistical Week 27 (last week) was Bristol Bay’s peak harvest week. This year’s single largest harvest day so far was July 4, when an estimated 2.3 million sockeye were caught.

Sunday’s Port Moller Test Fishery update from the Bristol Bay Science and Research Institute indicated the Bay is still on track to reach its preseason forecast. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s preseason commercial harvest forecast for Bristol Bay this year was 33.5 million sockeye.

Early season keta salmon harvest is down across most regions in the state, especially Prince William Sound. The large year-over-year decline in keta harvest is in part due to the comparison with above-average keta harvests in the region in 2025.
Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) harvest is down 78% from 2025, but it’s common for in-season Chinook harvest data to be delayed, so this may underestimate Chinook harvest to date.
