The fourth and final test of the season placed the sockeye salmon catch in line with the ten-year average. Pink reached 68% and chum 50%, while coho also remained below its usual levels.

The latest purse seine test fishery conducted in Hawk Inlet, Southeast Alaska, showed a sustained recovery in the presence of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka). However, results continued to be below average for pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch).

The fourth and final test of the season was conducted on July 17, 2026, by the F/V Osprey, a vessel contracted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) to carry out the 2026 coastal sampling.

According to the official report published on July 18, the sockeye catch reached 100% of the average recorded on similar dates over the past ten years.

The pink salmon catch represented 68% of the average, while chum stood at 50%. ADF&G further noted that the coho catch remained below average, although it did not provide a specific percentage for this species.

Evolution of Hawk Inlet Tests in 2026

The percentages express the catch obtained in each test relative to the ten-year average for equivalent dates. They do not represent a quota percentage or a direct estimate of the total run.

Baseline for comparison: Recent ten-year average for each sampling date. ADF&G did not publish specific percentages for coho. Click on the image to enlarge it

Progressive Recovery of Sockeye

The series shows a clear improvement in the indicator corresponding to sockeye. Its catch went from just 27% of the average in the first test to 56% in the second, 73% in the third, and finally 100% in the last test.

In terms of the indicator used by ADF&G, the final result represents an increase of 73 percentage points since the first sampling.

This progression is significant because initial results had shown levels considerably lower than usual. However, the comparison must be made with caution: each percentage uses the historical average corresponding to the specific date of the test as a reference, rather than a single absolute baseline for the entire season.

Pink Improves, but Falls Short of the Average

The recovery of pink salmon was also pronounced. The catch stood at just 1% of the average during the first two tests, increased to 29% on July 10, and reached 68% in the final sampling.

This represents an improvement of 67 percentage points between the first and last tests. Despite the advance, the final result remained 32% below the decadal average used as a reference.

The evolution offers a more favorable signal than that observed at the beginning of the season, although it does not yet allow concluding that the regional return has reached predicted levels.

ADF&G expected a catch of approximately 19 million pink salmon in Southeast Alaska for 2026, considered close to the average. This forecast was supported, among other indicators, by the abundance of juveniles observed during 2025.

Higher Volatility in Chum

The behavior of chum salmon was less consistent.

After reaching 35% of the average in the first test, it dropped to 19% on July 3. Subsequently, it rose to 69% before closing the series at 50%.

Unlike sockeye and pink, chum did not present a continuous recovery. The final result was 50% below the historical reference corresponding to that date.

The localized signal from Hawk Inlet must also be distinguished from the performance of other fisheries in Southeast Alaska. The ADF&G season summary indicates that the gillnet fleet recorded good chum catches in different sectors of the region and that the forecast for summer hatchery returns was approximately 9.9 million fish.

This reinforces the need not to automatically extrapolate Hawk Inlet results to the entirety of Southeast Alaska.

Composition of Pink Salmon Return

In the third test, 71% of the pink salmon captured were males, compared to a historical average of 59% for tests conducted around that date.

In the final sampling, the proportion of males decreased to 65%, but remained above the comparable average of 55%.

ADF&G published these values as part of the sampling characterization, but did not assert that the proportion of males alone determines the final size of the run. The data should be considered an indicator of composition and temporal evolution, not an independent abundance forecast. Click on the image to enlarge it

A Test Fishery Used Since 1992

ADF&G has used the Hawk Inlet test fishery annually since 1992. Its primary objective is to evaluate the intensity and timing of the return of pink salmon migrating through northern inside waters toward Lynn Canal and Stephens Passage.

It also allows analyzing the stock composition of sockeye and chum.

Each operational day includes a minimum of four sets at predetermined locations between Hawk Inlet and Point Retreat. Subsequently, sockeye and chum otoliths are analyzed to obtain information on stock composition and determine the proportion of wild and hatchery fish.

These data help manage potential commercial purse seine openings in the area and complement information coming from fisheries in northern Chatham Strait, Lynn Canal, and Stephens Passage.

Outlook for the Alaska Season

For Alaska as a whole, ADF&G projected a commercial catch of approximately 125.5 million salmon in 2026:

If realized, the total catch would be considerably lower than the approximately 197.4 million salmon recorded in 2025, a comparison heavily influenced by the biennial variability of pink salmon. Click on the image to enlarge it

The recovery observed in the latest Hawk Inlet test is a favorable signal for sockeye and shows a partial improvement for pink. However, the still weak results for pink, chum, and coho justify maintaining a cautious evaluation until broader data on commercial catches, effort, and escapement become available.
