The entity pondered that INIDEP elaborated a limit reference point, the CFP incorporated abundance criteria for the opening and closing of subareas and increased ground controls in the first week of the harvest.

From Cedepesca they assured that the shrimp fishery certification process "is several steps closer", in a statement sent by the environmental entity last Friday, after analyzing a series of events that occurred in recent weeks, when the new harvest in national waters within the permanent closed area for juvenile hake.

Cedepesca pondered that INIDEP had developed a limit reference point, that the Federal Fisheries Council incorporated an abundance criterion in the decision to open and close zones and that, from the Undersecretary of Fisheries, through its Supervision Directorate, they have achieved almost total coverage in discharge inspections.

"All these developments strengthen the prospects of having a sustainable shrimp stock and, therefore, significantly increase the probability of obtaining international recognition that the European and United States markets increasingly require, through independent certification" , remarked the civil organization through a statement.

They celebrate that INIDEP has proposed “in its Research Report 50/2022 an abundance reference point that would serve as a trigger threshold for the implementation of immediate measures to reduce fishing effort, to be defined by the Federal Fisheries Council. Said point consists of taking 60% of the average number of prawns surveyed during INIDEP's March campaigns as the trigger for these measures”, they affirmed.

In fact, INIDEP has recommended that when the biomass estimated in the March campaign is reduced by 40% with respect to the 2017 reference value, measures must be taken urgently. This arose from the evidence of a decrease in that value of 27%, which the certification manager acknowledges.

“There is a tendency to reduce biomass numerosity since its peak in 2017, although it reveals that this has not yet reached worrying levels and, as expressed by INIDEP in the aforementioned report: it is pertinent to emphasize that, despite all the variations that affected the shrimp population, through the joint work carried out between the application authority and the INIDEP researchers, the yield of the population, expressed in declared annual landings, has been sustained at excellent levels”, they presume from Cedepesca .

The entity underlines the control effort exhibited by the National Directorate for Fisheries Coordination and Control, which, they say, demonstrates "the vocation of the current fisheries authorities to ensure the sustainability of the fishery" and highlights as "good news" the behavior of the fishermen in the fact that only 6% of the inspections detected an infraction. Although the enthusiasm seems rushed, given that the season is just beginning and it is not yet guaranteed that the controls will remain at the same level.

Finally, the organization also found reasons to celebrate that in Chubut, in the last Rawson harvest, the requirements of Resolution 6/2019 were met, which establishes criteria for the opening and closing of the season based on technical reports, which were supplied in a timely manner.
