As June begins, a new regional price pattern is emerging in the global salmon market

Global Salmon Market Splits as China Rebounds and Europe Faces Price Pullback

WORLDWIDE
Wednesday, June 03, 2026, 05:00 (GMT + 9)

Contrasting regional demands create a divided global landscape as American wholesale prices also tick upward

The global salmon market is experiencing significant regional divergence ahead of June, according to a Food World Beijing report. While prices in China bounced back after weeks of steady decline to bring importers back into the green, Norwegian spot prices faced a minor correction. Meanwhile, the US market found its footing with renewed strength, and the Scottish market stabilized despite persistent weakness in overall consumer spending.

Importers in Guangzhou Breathe a Sigh of Relief

The Chinese market has emerged as one of the few global bright spots showing genuine signs of recovery. In previous weeks, a massive influx of large-sized Norwegian salmon combined with sluggish post-holiday consumer spending heavily weighed on market prices, forcing many local importers to absorb severe losses. However, by week 22, the downward trend in the Guangzhou market finally reversed.

According to the latest industry assessments, the price of 5–6 kg headed and viscerated Norwegian Atlantic salmon has climbed to 58 yuan/kg (approximately US$8.18/kg). Importers based in Guangzhou noted that this uptick functions primarily as a market correction. The protracted declines of earlier weeks had forced several distributors to liquidate stock below import costs. With this recent rebound, operations have returned to profitability, yielding margins of roughly 2 yuan/kg (approximately US$0.28/kg).

Market analysts caution that this price recovery does not signal a sudden explosion in consumer demand. Instead, it reflects a stabilizing market normalizing its profit margins after a prolonged slump.

European Buyers Push Norwegian Spot Prices Down

In stark contrast to China's recovery, the Norwegian spot market experienced a slight cooling trend. On May 29, multiple European market participants confirmed that the price of Norwegian salmon scheduled for delivery in week 23 (June 1–7) dipped by a few cents compared to the previous week.

European processing firms are currently securing contracts primarily between €7.00/kg (approximately US$7.56/kg) and €7.15/kg (approximately US$7.72/kg). This marks a visible decline from the prior week's trading range of €7.15/kg to €7.25/kg (approximately US$7.72/kg to US$7.83/kg). Insiders report that larger fish weighing 6 kg or more are sustaining better market health than medium-sized options, causing the price gap between 4–5 kg and 5–6 kg product lines to narrow drastically.

Supply Tightness Sparks a Rebound in the United States

Across the Atlantic, the US market charted a different path. In week 22, wholesale prices for Norwegian salmon in the United States broke free from a multi-week slump, driven by a renewed rise in chilled fillet costs.

Prices for 2–3 lb, 3–4 lb, and 4–5 lb fillets all climbed by roughly $0.10/lb (approximately $0.22/kg), dragging whole fish prices upward in tandem.

Despite the positive movement, industry insiders view this price hike as a structural adjustment within supply chains rather than the beginning of a prolonged bullish surge. As the US market heads into June, aggregate demand remains steady, but localized supply imbalances persist—leaving certain product specifications highly restricted while others remain readily available.
