Distribution chains in São Paulo increase orders for fresh white fish to cover demand from the institutional food and corporate catering segments.

SÃO PAULO – The seafood commercialization market in Brazil has consolidated an increase in the distribution volumes of fresh Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fillets oriented to the foodservice channel. Commercial statistics for the sector reveal that the consumption of white-meat seafood from domestic aquaculture production has partially displaced imports of frozen demersal species, driven by stability in farm-gate prices and a preference for products with animal welfare certification and full traceability from origin.

The Ceagesp commercialization cluster in São Paulo has registered a steady flow of entries, with stable prices that allow catering companies to structure long-term corporate menus without the risk of exchange rate volatility affecting imported products. Aquaculture producers' guilds in the country anticipate that total farmed fish production will maintain a growth rate of 5.8% by the close of the year, consolidating tilapia's position as the leading aquatic protein in terms of sales volume in the domestic market.

The consolidation of domestic aquaculture in key states such as Paraná and São Paulo has transformed the dynamics of the Brazilian wholesale market. Traditionally dependent on the import of hake fillets from neighboring countries or panga from Southeast Asia, the corporate catering and school feeding circuit is opting for local supply contracts. The reasons behind this structural shift point not only to the reduction of the logistics carbon footprint, but also to the notable improvement in industrial yields of national processing plants, which today deliver fillets with minimal glazing percentages and cuts to exact specifications for individual portions.

Additionally, the farmed shrimp sector (Penaeus vannamei) in the Northeast region is aggressively redirecting its exportable surpluses towards the South and Southeast markets of the country. Weakness in international shrimp prices has discouraged shipments to traditional markets in the European Union, motivating producers' cooperatives to develop modified atmosphere packaging for the Brazilian retail sector. This flow of domestic supply has democratized access to crustacean protein in medium-sized urban centers, stabilizing wholesale prices at highly competitive levels for the local consumer.

Below is the structure of reference wholesale prices for the highest-circulating aquaculture products:

Distribution projections for the second half of 2026 suggest that supermarket chains will massively expand shelf space dedicated exclusively to ready-to-cook fresh aquaculture products. Technological investments made in automated grow-out farms in the interior of the country guarantee a constant supply throughout the year, mitigating the seasonal fluctuations typical of open-ocean extractive catches. Distributors in São Paulo are confident that the stability of the Real against regional currencies will finalize the consolidation of this consumption pattern, positioning farmed seafood as the fastest-growing segment within the federation's refrigerated protein business.
