Port quotations for the jumbo squid resource record a cumulative increase of 4.2% due to logistical delays and reinforced sanitary inspections at destination customs.

BEIJING – The economic panel of the China Squid Index has revealed significant fluctuations in port prices for the giant squid or jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas) commercialized in the main processing complexes of Zhejiang Province. The reduction in offloading times of the distant-water fishing fleet, added to the implementation of new mandatory phytosanitary controls at refrigerated cargo terminals, has pressured raw material values upward, temporarily limiting the operating margins of local plants oriented to the export of frozen rings and tubes.

The report details that, although the total stock in the central cold storage facilities of Zhoushan remains at stable levels of industrial security, the inventory turnover rate has decreased due to the slowdown in the issuance of customs clearance certificates. This friction in the supply chain has caused an immediate spike in spot offers from primary processors, who seek to transfer additional storage and freezing costs to the final buyer.

The logistical situation at the docks of Zhejiang Province has been affected by the confluence of regulatory and climatic factors. On one hand, the General Administration of Customs of China has increased the sampling of imported lots from the Southeast Pacific, looking for traces of environmental contaminants and verifying compliance with illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing regulations. On the other hand, the lower availability of reefer containers on regional routes has increased domestic freights by 8.5%, making the inter-port movement of raw squid blocks that must be processed in secondary cutting lines more expensive.

At the plant level, portioning and value-added factories are operating under a scheme of extremely narrow margins. Giant squid is the base of a massive re-export industry to North America and the European Union; however, Western buyers have shown resistance to accepting new price increases in long-term supply contracts, arguing a slowdown in consumption within the self-service channel. This places Chinese processors at an operational crossroads: absorb the raw material increase at port or reduce working hours on packing lines to avoid overproduction of high-cost inventory.

Below is the matrix of official closing prices for the different commercial specifications of the processed resource:

Market analysts in Zhoushan anticipate that this upward behavior of spot prices will extend for the next three weeks, coinciding with the technical maintenance period for a substantial part of the distant-water fleet operating outside the Exclusive Economic Zone of South American countries. If there is no easing in customs clearance times or an injection of fresh catches by refrigerated logistics vessels, medium-sized plants could be forced to make scheduled technical shutdowns, altering the planned flow of value-added products towards main global destination ports during the upcoming autumn commercial cycle.
