The campaign extended over three weeks under a selective fishing strategy targeting specimens exceeding 100 kilos in average weight

The fleet led by the company Balfegó has concluded its annual bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) fishing campaign in the western Mediterranean after successfully completing 100% of its allocated quota, reaching a total of 4,045 tons.

This year, the extractive activity lasted for three weeks, a schedule shaped by rigorous meteorological management that forced the fleet to remain moored in port and without operational activity for four days due to bad weather and rough sea conditions.

The company highlighted the strict application of a deliberate selective fishing strategy, governed by its quality standards and sustainability commitments. The central objective of the campaign was not the speed of extraction, but rather minimizing the number of specimens captured by exclusively targeting large, adult fish.

The deputy director of Balfegó, Juan José Navarro, stressed that the company seeks pieces that "easily exceed 100 kilos," even though current legislation permits the harvesting of specimens over 30 kilos.

From a biological standpoint, Navarro indicated that it is far more efficient to extract a few large specimens to meet the quota than to penalize dozens of young individuals. The firm's explicit purpose is to capture the same biomass with the fewest fish possible, a model whose results confirm the success of the operation.

The fishing campaign required the coordination of a complex operational framework consisting of 13 purse seine vessels (from Spain, France, and Italy) and 26 auxiliary support boats, a mobilization that generated more than 350 direct jobs in the territory.

Furthermore, the entire operation was strictly supervised by independent observers from the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) and monitored through the use of stereoscopic camera technology for the precise verification of the resource's average weight.

Following the conclusion of the catches, the orderly towing of the 19 mobile aquaculture transport pools is currently underway, transferring the live specimens to the company's concession zones located off the coast of L’Ametlla de Mar.

Balfegó
