Muros - The Galician Mussel Producers Organization (Opmega) began removing the more than 2,400 collection ropes suspended from the long lines installed in the Ensenada de Esteiro, in Muros, this week. This system allows for the controlled capture of wild seafood seed in its natural environment. Once removed from the ropes, the seed mussel, which is currently in an initial growth phase, is transported by sea and land to different destinations, where it will be used immediately for re-roping and subsequent biological cultivation on traditional rafts (bateas).

Representatives from Opmega highlighted that this initiative directly responds to a proposal that the industry organization had been firmly defending before the Public Administration for more than 5 years, and that the technical results obtained are confirming its complete utility. In addition to helping guarantee a permanent availability of seed, the system relieves extraction pressure on traditional rocky coastal zones and advances toward a much more balanced utilization of the region's marine resources.

The organization reiterates that the sustainability of the sector depends heavily on securing a steady supply of seed mussel without compromising the coastal ecosystems on which the economic activity itself relies. In this regard, collection via long line ropes has become an indispensable strategic tool to complement other supply sources and reinforce the future viability of Galician mussel production.

The operation carried out in Esteiro also incorporates advanced control and monitoring systems that allow the exact origin, volume, and destination of the captured seed to be known at all times. This traceability ensures rigorous compliance throughout the entire logistical process, from sea collection to arrival at the various branches and individual producers.

The more than 2,400 ropes installed in the inlet are being phased out over the coming days, following the completion of the biological collection cycle.
