Imports of fresh and frozen seafood products increase in value during the first four months of 2026, while family purchases show a downward trend

TOKYO — The latest data issued by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, corresponding to the month of April 2026, reveal a significant transformation in commercial dynamics. While the global volume of total fish and seafood imports experienced a slight downward adjustment, the commercial value of key species such as tuna (Thunnus) registered an increase, driven by a clear redistribution of consumer spending toward the catering sector and dining out.

According to trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance, general seafood imports in April 2026 stood at 181,057 metric tons, representing a 6% decrease in volume compared to the same month of the previous year. However, the total value of these acquisitions rose to 184,977 million yen (approximately 1,160 million US$), which equivalent to a 3% increase in value. This monetary rebound was mainly led by the increase in imports of fresh and frozen tuna, which managed to offset the drops recorded in the purchases of other high-value species.

At the domestic consumption level, the figures accumulated between January and April 2026 confirm a contraction in the purchase of fish and seafood for food preparation at home. Household spending tracking data indicates that fresh tuna purchases per household averaged 535 grams during the first four months, reflecting a decline compared to the 574 grams recorded in the same period of the previous year. A similar trend was observed in ready-to-consume sashimi assortments, whose domestic sales also decreased. Industry analysts directly associate this contraction with a modification in consumption habits, where population spending is actively shifting toward food establishments and sushi chains, to the detriment of traditional preparation of these dishes in the residential environment.
